What color?

My favorite is still the black flint we used to get around McMinnville, Tennessee when I was still tromping around that state. It occurs as nodules in the Fort Payne Formation surrounding the central highland rim in the state. It was competent enough to make anything from large spear points down to the small 'bird points' and was prized during Indian occupation by the Cherokee and Creek nations.

Here in Missouri, we have loads of chert of all types and colors that qualify as knapping flint. Quality varies.

You tried obsidian?

That stuff is so sharp, it's STILL used in surgical knives. I have an obsidian knife at home, and it cuts through paper like butter. The big nightmare for rangers at Yellowstone is still a busload of geology students with rock hammers headed towards Obsidan Cliff. Collecting there without a permit is still illegal and prosecuted.

Hi, Rhino. :)
I'm actually looking for flint for fire-starting with steel as well. Found some brown chert at Marin Headlands, but it breaks up just as it makes a spark. Apparently the best flint comes from England.
I have some friends who knap with obsidian; they say they get it from a place called "Glass Mountain". I should start knapping with that, huh? :coffee:

Have a great Friday!

yeah Dougly, we have chert and flint up here as boulders and rocks in the rivers. I know of lots of chert in Nevada........but as mentioned, obsidian is maybe the best! As it so happens, I have several hundred pounds here, if you want some. Happy to share.
I've had difficulty, telling chert from flint.........

^Rhino: are you sure about the labradorite in Academy black and India black? I know, for carving the "absolute black" is about the hardest and abrasive resistant.......the red cuts by chisel or sandblast pretty fast, similar to Sierry White and some of the lighter stones.
do you have a website for composition and properties? I'd love to look some stuff up.
All my info, is merely "hands on/experience" from cutting, carving, drilling, splitting and polishing, alas, no college for me.
It great, though, to have you around, for geology stuff!! I always appreciate the info, and have no issue with being told I'm wrong or mistaken..........

I once saw an arrowhead made by Ishi from glass. A piece of bottle, I think. Apparently, he did a lot of those.

And thank s for the picture, Simon. I love it.

I am a week late! More than!
It has been crazy.
I went camping at Coyote Dunes this past week.
About 30 of us. Many of whom are musicians and brought their instruments, amplifiers, etc and live jammed.
Took a flight in my friend's two man ultralight and we crashed.
Hit nose first and tumbled 4x.
We got out and checked our bodies for broken limbs, followed the blood trails and found no deep cuts, eyes steady, so lucky.
The plane is destroyed.
I am overcome with the feeling of living and thankful for every small thing.
Thanks for the birthday wishes, ygmir and goathead.
I love you guys.

it's probably time to start drinking more, and in the morning, prepping for TTITD and all, yes?

well, the county said I can haul and dump up to 50 cu. yds. of clean fill (hardly very much), without a permit, but admonished me to sweep the pavement and not let my dirt touch their road bed (also dirt). yeah, ok......seems we "own" our property, at the pleasure of gov. and others, so, really just rent it.

ah well, Off to Oakland today for the PGE staff meeting/BBQ/mass debauche.
