Great story, Fishy, especially this:

My father's family left Germany in the late 30s. My grandfather's family was Jewish. He left first, leaving my grandmother, my father, and his two sibs, my great-grandmother and some sort of cousin, plus various pets, behind, as there were currency restrictions at the time. He took work as an expert witness to make money before he sent for them. When it came time for the rest of the family to come over, the SS colonel wouldn't grant the exit visas. Lilo went to his office, dressed in her best, and pulled some sort of "if I act as if everything is normal and in order he'll grant them" and what do you know, she was right. The SS still hung out and watched as they packed...

It's strange what nerve and good clothes can do. Anywhere. Smart lady.

Happy halloween, everybody! Around here today it looks like we've got a 2 for 1 special on black and orange parades, with one for the local sportsball team going on now I think (judging from the helicopters and shift in crowd noises from parties in houses/apartments to wandering down the street).

I'm happy to report I've heard from most of my friends and campmates in the areas affected by Sandy. Power's non-existant for several, though they're able to get to places that offer them the ability to charge devices so they can keep in touch. Lots of disruption and wet things, but no utter devastation (none of them had fancy beachfront anythings or lived in lower-lying areas).

Love those pics of the Hof, Yggy! Looks like all the hatches are fully battened down for the winter, though the view from that campsite is still spectacular even in the off season.

Oh yeah, Yggy, I forgot to share this pic with you the other day. While hitting up a local food truck hot spot the other day I happened across something you might get a kick out of… nordic truck!

There's a smorgasbord of options, I'm sure.

Plus mead in a drinking horn. Compostable, of course.

Hi YG, We had our first big rain storm last night and now it has moved east to you. The Hof sure looks great! What a big job. Kudos. Guessing that MDF and many of our other east coast e playans are out of power. Hope that's all they are hurting from.

Cheers everyone

Hi Marty!
yeah, we've been getting pretty steady, moderate rain all night.
Yeah, not hearing from east coast folks, is sort of disconcerting....MDF was good to go the other day, and I think Bin was ok, Sham was on generator power, IIRC........Simon just willed the storm around him, I'm sure..........

Yeah, they were serving food. I didn't see lutefisk on the menu, if I remember correctly it was mostly north/arctic seafood type stuff (though I remember some kind of braised pork with a strange-sounding sauce). Had my friends at Bacon Bacon not been there as well I would have given them a try, hopefully they'll be back to the streat food park soon.

Yggy, they keep talking about this being a wetter than average winter based on the warm water currents, my fingers are crossed and I'm hoping that means you guys get a really heavy dumping or two in the next couple weeks. Aside from just plain needing the wetness and moisture, it'd be nice for those in the ski resort towns to have a really prosperous season.

yeah Trilo........it'd be good for the ski resorts, for sure.......and all of us in CA, to have a good, better than average, snowpack.....but I remember some El Nino years where the snow level was so high, storage was actually down, though rainfall was up.
we need that heavy, low snow pack to meter the water out through the year.

I got stuck behind their tour bus once for three hundred miles.
They were in the left lane going 45 mph.

And their left turn signal was on the whole time.

You're not allowed to pass on the right.

But if it was a waterway, I'd say you were being too littoral.
