Nahhh -- I'm old but not that old! Besides, I've seen my butt in a mirror, so I know it's best kept hidden! But dawggonnit, I don't need to waddle around with a "spare tire" around my middle. It used to be a motorcycle tire, and now it's down to a bicycle tire, so I'm doing good.

To make up for the "missing spare", I'm fabrication a "spare tire" costume out of a real tire, to wear at Anything But Clothing night at the Booby Bar. One of those tires you see in my avatar.

For motivating a fitness routine, there's nothing quite like joining an event in the future, such as registering for a race, or getting that playa-bod. ;)

That's what I'm trying to do here, yes. And the more who join in, the better.

Every year, I participate in the Grand Championship Kinetic Sculpture Race on Memorial Wekend (last weekend of May), and last year I tried doing the race solo -- and bonked. I could blame it on my knee that gave out, but wasn't in shape for the race. So that's my first goal -- to be in shape for Memorial Weekend. Then, by Burning Man, I should be even more fit.

•A 2008 study found that people who ate a small amount of dark chocolate a day (about 6.7 grams) had lower levels of a protein that is associated with inflammation in their blood.
•Other recent studies have found that blood platelets clump together more slowly in chocolate eaters. Clumping platelets can lead to the formation of blood clots, which in turn can cause a heart attack. Chocolate consumption may lower blood pressure, help prevent formation of artery plaques and improve blood flow, according to other research.
•Eating chocolate may even help with math, or at least counting. A study reported in 2009 showed that people did a better job of counting backwards in groups of three after they had consumed a hot cocoa drink containing large amounts of a compound found in chocolate. These compounds, called flavonoids, which we'll get to later, may increase blood flow to the brain.
•Chocolate may also have anti-cancer benefits because flavonoids may help reduce the cell damage that can spur tumor growth.

Didn't I mention earlier that chocolate is a health food? Well, I should have.

Easter? Being a heathen, I don't keep up with such events, but heck yeah -- fitness program suspended for Chocolate Bunny Hunting Season!

Now.... My limited experience with American chocolate bunnies is that they are hollow. That's not how we do things where I come from. I grew up in Norway. I don't remember any bunnies for Easter, but they make chocolate pigs for Christmas, and those are filled with marzipan.

Snow day! Yeah, I know, spring, my ass.

Light weights and stretches today, taking it easy, I'm pretty banged up from my tumble off the bottom of the basement stairs. Sheesh, I need a stunt double.

All right... I could use some guidance and wisdom here. Bicycling is giving me a sore shoulder -- from "hanging onto" the handlebar. This happened last summer also, so it is definitely from bicycling (although working the computer mouse "does not help"). It is now affecting my whole arm. The doc says it is a pinched nerve, and I need to give up bicycling for a while, then ride only occationally after the problem clears up. I don't doubt her professional expertise, but maybe somebody here has personal experience with this problem?

I might try a recumbent bike.

ooohh just found this thread, so I'm chiming in. My motivation is to be healthier, look better and not feel so porky at bm this year. I have made a commitment to get on the treadmill 6 days a week. At first it was hard but after the first 2 weeks I found myself almost looking forward to it (weird). I am up to 36 minutes and averaging 2.25 miles. I am also an ice cream lover so I just can't keep it in the house at all. As my name suggests my weakest times are when I get the munchies so I am abstaining from my favorite past-time until I lose at least ten pounds or until next harvest...

I have backslid a little. The shoulder is still sore, so I'm staying off the bicycle. But it is getting better -- v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y. The doc gave me a muscle relaxant, which is probably helping. I do get a bit of varied exercise -- right now I'm hanging some of my bicycles from the rafters in the barn.

The plan is to do less cycling and more walking. I have a marvellously forested State Park right down the street, and I have walked the trails there many a time. I figure I can ride to the park, lock the bike, walk for a while, then ride home.

Oh yes.... "Cyclist Shoulder". Turns out, this is quite common. Need more variation in the exercise regime, yes.

Evenings have been too busy lately. I have to terminate my membership at the climbing gym. :( = $
My Co. has a small workout room which I have a membership for; I need a backpack at work for when I get an urge to sweat. One of my projects is APFT: 2 mile run and pushups and situps for max reps within 5 minutes each. Then I follow up with a few sets of pullups. Maybe clean and jerk with a 100-lb bar if I am motivated.

So, I've been reading this thread for a while, and now that I'm exercising thought I'd start posting. Same as most, me and a buddy are trying to loose some weight/firm up by August. About two years ago I started working a job at a desk, in a chair, behind a computer for 8hrs a day, as a drafter. This is the job I went to school for, so I can't complain too much, but this gut isn't what I went to school for
Goal 1) Be able to walk 8hrs carrying 3ltrs of water with out being so exhausted I'm worthless the next day.
Goal 2) Get this exponential expansion under control.

Me and my girlfriend are walking (fast) for an hour a couple times a week. Me and my buddy are hitting the gym twice a week.
And on Saturdays were going on "adventures." This weekend it was to a near by canyon were we climbed, jumped, and crossed lots of rocks and the stream.
Why don't ya stick your head in that hole and find out? ~piehole

I'm also trying to lose weight for the trip & for my health in general. I want to lose weight but also be in good shape. I'd like to be able to run a mile without dying before then, I don't even run at all now.

Here I go................

Loaded and then unloaded a bed level load of composted manure this weekend. Dug lots of holes for plants. Lots of outdoor exercise that I've tried to do at a pace that keeps my heart rate up. So far, feeling good!

I went on the truck with Larry. Ate crap food, although I had a salad at Carl's Jr. Climbing in and out of the truck must count as something. Very sore from just sitting for over 12 hours the first day. Got my "truck butt" back on day two. Got drunk in Vegas at Coyote Ugly's. The bouncers are nice to us, let me sit on a stool behind the roped off area... the drunks were convinced I was the owner, LOL. Saw the mud pit in Disneyland which will become Cars, the Experience. Disney behind the scenes is weird, and cooler than it has a right to be. Got snowed on from Cedar City up to Nephi.

Back home now, although I could go again today. I think not, huh?
