Archantael originally spewed this crap in the middle of our conversation wrote:How is it that a topic can go from serious to stupid in less than five seconds flat? There were some interesting comments being made until the last two yahoos' jumped on board, dam a banana? get real in your pants?IN YOUR DREAMS.

Archantael continued with wrote:The defense is appreciated Stolenkisses but you did take it a little to
personally. The comments were directed towards myself and not towards others. We can learn a lesson from that type of posting by the Real Last
Burner and that is to simply ignore such rantings of a simple minded person.

Calm down and enjoy life.

Archantael then inappositely stated wrote:This thread has developed into a very interesting situation to say the least, Lydia, I will also agree with you on that same point and will contribute something highbrow instead of slamming people.

Last Real Burner,

This is my formal apology, I am sorry, end of story.

Let me get this straight. You come on this board, slam me by calling me a yahoo, then in a feign attempt at conciliation, you slam me again by calling me simple minded, then act all fucking high and mighty with you're backhanded apology, and then to conversely end the situation as if it is futilely unprotestable. Well excuse the fuck out of me for existing. I have never met you before now, nor I'm sure anyone else on this board had, before you posted, "25 messages ago, so to come off as some authority on how converstaions on this board should be condutced is at best ludicrice. After all, who shit in a hole, and left you in charge. And as far as you're apology, it is totally pointless because I know you are not sincere. Oh yes, I'm pretty sure won't have to worry about you posting anything highbrow (here or anywhere else for that matter). It is, and I mean this in the most flattering way, above you're cromagnonic intellectual capicity (sorry did I use to many big words for you?) I would call you a half wit but that would imply that you had half a wit.

And as far as your defense by the school marme "ImageStolenkisses", I got one word for you "Image"
With teachers like you, it's no wonder our fucking kids can't read.

Pic removed, bad link. And the FAS doesn't need the bandwidth hit. Sorry.

Hold your fire. I don't hate this place at all. And those shit throwing monkeys are not me nor do I exercise any control over them. If you have a problem with them, you take it in their direction. As for any problems with me, you shouldn't have any problems with me. If you do, open up and let 'er rip. I'm right here, I'm not going anywhere so let's get it dealt with. I changed ID's but I am committed to going back to BM in 04 and I'm going to be on both boards to get the info I need and make my trip a success. So if there's a problem with me, bring it on, let's hash it out now. Otherwise I'm dropping it and anyone with gripes can just sit there and stew, bitch, play with themselves, whatever but don't bitch at me. This petty shit is not worth much more of my time, or yours either.

Dear Mr. Real Last Burner,"

You have slammed one of the members of this board.

No, I responded to someone calling me a mindless yahoo.

if you would kinldy reread your post and consider yourself and arrogant flaming asshole

I reread my post, and reconsidered what I said, and you know what? You are absolutely right, I am an arrogant, flaming asshole, and it's mighty nice of you to notice. As a matter of fact, you're equally, if not better endowed with these endearing qualities yourself.

I would also like to point out the fact you[i] are not a fucking Aristotle or TS Elliot yourself.

Ah yes, this is, unfortunatly, a fact. However to my credit, I do have a published, out-of-print poetry book, with another one, more commercially available on the way. "The Stupendous Technicolor See-Through Art and Convenience Store Book..." go here  http://www.enchantia.org/TheRebbi.htm I appreciate you giving me this opportunity to push the new book.

I have read some of your posts and find them to be along the same lines as some of my most arrogant, self centered college students that I teach on an everyday basis.

At lest you didn't say they were bad. Last time I looked, arrogance and being self centered was not illegal, nor considered all that bad in today's society. Furthermore, from what I have gathered from you so far, I think teach is a strong word I think irrepairabally alter.

Their world centers along getting laid and drinking. There is much more to life than these cheap thrills.

Hello!! You left out drugs. (sounds like you could use a cheap thrill or two yourself there sista. )

It seems that you probably partake of that same self spoiled indulgent manner.

No I don't!!! And if you say that one more time I'm leaving!

On the other hand, you fucking dipshit,

Didn't you just say you were a teacher?

(excuse me for stepping down to your level)

Down? Image I was thinking more of a World Trade Center Elevator Ride up to my level.

I do participate fully and faithfully in the true [b] spirit of Burning Man.

and How, do you do that, pray tell, show you're tits to the class, and set a bunch of books and maps on fire?

You, however, are probably one of the "fence sitters" that probably do not participate and have turned the event into some capitalistic opportunity...

Paging Mr. Gates, Paging Mr. Gates... Larry Harvey on line one (bob, do we have a clue for today's contestant?)

Along those lines, this is a place to express one of our greatest given rights to FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

True, this is a place to express one's right to Freedom of Speech. However, I really don't think that right of expression includes slander and defamatory remarks.

Please let me give you a clue as to where you can find that information.

(~I'm sorry bob, she already has clue, therefore, she no longer qualifies as clueless, however if she gives away her v-e-r-y l-a-s-t clue-e-e-e...)

Lets see, the Constitution of the United States. Do you even know what is so important about that document. It might behoove you to read up on it once in awhile

Last I read, it said nothing about being able to call someone a yahoo, or simple minded. ( ~looking over "stolenkisses's" sholder~ Hey wait! She's got a different document... prolly 'cause she's white.)

and I know that you can read and write.

Owwww... I'm sorry... penalty flag on the comment. You're gonna lose a down, and we're gonna have to deduct five yards for "thinly veiled petty insults and stating the obvious", first down LRB.

Hello fellow burners. I am new here and have been lurking for awhile. Trying to get an understanding of the ways here.

Are the conversations in this thread of the norm?

Just an observation of the past 3 days or so.

I have no problem with it, just looking for a clue so not to be too out of place.

I would like to go to Burningman in 04 and would like to have an idea of what may be or not be in store.

thanks.

This is the norm on this thread, now.

It appears that various individuals tend to take themselves and other waaaaaaaay too seriously. At the actual event, the social forces that encourage cohesion and discourage violent confrontation almost always overpower the petty bickering you see here.

Other threads manage to stay lighter and more fun. The things to do, if you're asking, is avoid in enaging in trolling or responding to attacks. I've learned that gradually, though I still let myself poke fun at people who get all ranty and ragey over nothing. But even that gets old.

What you should definitely NOT do is try to re-engineer the social structure of the the threads. Start your own if you want--anyone can.
It ain't the hanging, it's the drop.

Somebody just got thoroughly spanked. I'm glad that wasn't me...yikes.

DVD Burner, this does come up from time to time but no, it's not the way things work around here. Don't let this scare you off. There are some damn good people on this board, people that when you come out to the playa and meet them your most likely going to like. When people post online and I'm guilty of this one, you forget that words on an electronic screen don't show the same emotion or inflections that the spoken word does. The potential for miscommunication is very high around here, it's so easy to screw up. Anyway I have no business being on a soapbox this early in the morning. Welcome to the eplaya and just ignore the flamethrowers you might see going off around here.

Being New to BM

Postby Keltoi » Sun Dec 14, 2003 8:54 am

DVD Burner, I joined the eplaya board early yesterday afternoon and have encountered and read many of the threads. Most of them seem to be funny and some are mud slinging contests. I was going to try to come out to the 2004 event. A shipmate told me about Burning Man and I found it interesting. I was just informed by my XO, that we are being deployed in Jan and will be gone for 6 month tour with a possible extended 3 months. Military life is grand, being a pilot is even worse.

This will be my last post and I have enjoyed talking to the people on the board and reading the threads. I would have enjoyed meeting you in person. DVD Burner, I hope that you will be able to enjoy what I have to miss out on.

Absolutely...I took off work for it and am working 4 hours Christmas day to offset the time. 90+ minutes to go...I wonder what it's going to be like. And it's only the second time I will hear Larry Harvey speak. The only other time I heard him was during his SF Mayor endorsement speech!

I too, would love to point out the address window in your browser, use that to haul your area code size ass somewhere else. (B-T-W that, check your post advice, seems in order for you as well, the intials are LRB, fingerpointer heal thyself, or were you trying to insult me again by misanthroping my name?).

As to promoting your new book on this board, you have turned the event into a "capitalistic opportunity".

Yes sir, point taken, and I apologies to all for that. Even though it was basically done, tongue in cheek (you actually can no longer buy the "Technicolor" book, or the "not released yet" new book from that website, so it's techically not commercialism) I should however, avoid soiling the Eplaya with commercial base ranting, no matter what the intent. In my 4 or 5 years here on the Eplaya I should know this. After all that is a big No No around these parts.Image

I do not have the desire to read someone's work who cannot even spell correctly.

Just can't resist taking those cheap petty jabs can you, Mr High and Mighty?Image

And yes, I am guilty of not going back and updating the website with the correct copy that shipped, but I've been too busy making movies. And I should spell check my post here on the Eplaya as well, but mostly I just don't have time and basically most everybody gets the crux of what I am try say anyway So sue me. On the other hand spell check does nothing for the lack of content, and breath of negativity, as in your post. maybe you should try some of Image"stolenkises's" cheap thrills, or provide one for each other (maybe you and her can start your own bbs, and rag on each other and their posts).

I retract my appology. I have no desire to apologize, which by all means, was sincere, to a protozoan like yourself.

Why thank you, I accept your groveling, pityful, weak (but heartfelt) appology, it about time you exhibited a little remorse for you childlike behavior. (and FYI I'm actually a methodist)

I have better things to do with my life than to sit here and post arguments back and forth like a game of badminton.

QUESTION: How many subscribers to a bbs does it take to
change a light bulb?

Answers:

1 - to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed

14 - to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light
bulb could have been changed differently

7 - to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs

27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs

41 - to correct spelling/grammar flames

6 - to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ...

Another 6 to condemn those 6 as anal-retentive

2 - industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"

27 - to post URLs where one can see examples of different light bulbs

12 - to post to the board that they will no longer post because they cannot
handle the light bulb controversy

4 - to post privately to other members of the board to ask if this makes sense

44 - to send the URL to http://www.snopes.com and ask that
the original poster check out their resources first

2 - to post reasons why the light bulb burning out is the result of a
government conspiracy

4 - to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"

43 - to say "do a Google search on light bulbs"

1 - lurker to respond to the original post 6 months later and start the whole
thing all over again!

I think an apology is in order. That wasn't just mud slinging in that exchange. I'm not easily shocked but that was a bit much even for me.

Even the military has choices in the level of firepower they bring into a particular situation. You don't drop daisy cutters when a 155mm shell will do the trick. A good flame war can be interesting but not if it goes into overkill....

huh?

the eplaya, in once sense, is just a piece of software. it doesn't want anything.

in another sense, it's a community. that community didn't *want* to spin off other communities, but it did want software that allowed it to flow, rather than struggle. that desire caused it to split up, though i think if you asked any of them, they would have been more than happy to use these forums if the basic interface requirements were met.

and judging by spanky's comments elsewhere, i'm sure the admins don't want people convening elsewhere.

so i'm not sure which interpretation of the eplaya you think wants to spin off communities, but i can't see that anywhere.

For the record, I have no problem with the spinoffs. I don't think we should have a corner on the burner connection market.

Spanky's comments simply noted his understandable frustration in the lack of help we received to fix this board. Lots of criticism about us messing with the eplaya, lots of expression of ownership by the community, but little actual assistance in it's maintenance and improvement.

I understand much of that, tho - doing things by consensus guarantees that they happen more slowly, and it's how we do things here. Which means that a simple decision and action by one person that should take 20 min often takes 20 days or more. We, as a functional team, are a work in progess, as is the eplaya itself.

I don't blame III and herself for going off and making their own boards to their own specifications. I think it's great that they have created other resources for their smaller, more intimate communities. As I commented elsewhere, in a way it gives us proof that the eplaya is achieving its ultimate goal - to connect burners into communities.

Re: "lack of help", I help here the same way I did on the old board -- by browsing amongst the aspiring illuminati, and aspirating illuminations in turn.

I don't pretend to be one of the founding fuckwits of the eplaya -- it was already a couple of years old before I logged on -- and a major reason I started participating was simply that Eric Pouyoul's burnman-list (shudder!!! a preeplaya preoffshoot!!!) was increasingly showing signs of inbreeding, a tendency to attract the more clueless and reactionary variety of newbies, and an inherent vulnerability wrt alt-culture promotional spam. Here, although in some ways there is a striking resemblance to dippiness of the burnman-list, there is a much greater opportunity to choose your battles/orgies/whatever.

As with other forums, including project listservs, I make it a general practice not to respond to private messages or email, preferring discussion to be out in the open -- and it should be truly self-evident that the board is where all unalienable, lively, libertine, and happy things are or should be happening, not elsewhere. That's why it's called a "community discussion board".
