I can see the lure, but it's not my personal fascination: Organization being an unattainable goal for me and a large focus of office supplies... I guess I like the pens and stuff.
tpbm is trying to reduce the power that retail products have over their life.
I actually broke that spell a few years ago. It's amazing what having an unpredictable income does to your spending habits. It's no longer about "Can I afford this" it's more "Can I afford this and know that I'll continue to live comfortably if all of my clients leave town for a year?" which pretty much always comes up as a resounding "Nope!". It's not that I'm living paycheck to paycheck, but some paychecks are three times the size of others and I'll end a given month in the red as often as not. It really changes what you consider necessary or even worth buying.
TPBM has never had a fixed-income job (mostly consistent hours or straight salary).
