A Supreme Yahoo

Scroll down and read the article in the party review section of this "recreational hate" newsletter from UCSD.

The supreme yahoo/loser/creep who writes for this group happened to meet my brother who also attends that college. My clueless brother told him that the topless girl in the SD decompression picture was me, and he somehow found my e-mail. He called the girl he presumed to be me, " the rockstar girl" because he learned of my being a musician. Thus the label in the picture

The thing is,
1) I was not present at this party

2) I find the caption " the tits are not censored because there are none" incredibly rude.

3) they don't fucking get it, and I get mad when burner women become a fetish for those who judge the entire culture to be simply "free hippy shit" and drugs.

4) I'm creeped out because the yahoo located me in some odd search in his false belief that the girl was me.

The Article

Postby TawnyGnosis » Mon Nov 24, 2003 12:41 am

I'll write out the article here. It's not that outwardly bad, but go look at the context of it in the whole paper+ the picture of the girl who is not me.

Valley Center decompression, 2003.

Goddam- only burning man " burners" are loony enough to congregate for a weekend sleepover full of bonfires, flaming poi spinning, flaming baton spinning and flaming swordsmanship in the charred yard of a house that almost burned down in the fucking paradise fire! Oh how the neighbors loved us. Loved us enough to call the police and the fire department. Each. Twice. Everytime they left, we relit the barrels, re-opened the sex room and got jiggier with those sweet tribal rhthyms.

Everyone dressed in trippy costumes, which they changed every fifteen minutes or so, a process that left Mike and I feeling like neanderthals in our ponchos, which were pillaged from a helpless chile'era in TJ. Either that or they were just naked. There was all sorts of free hippy shit going on . And a lot of fun stuff to do while naked.

We got there early to help set up 'cause there ain't no spectators in the land of the man. Inside there were all sorts of fun things to do and naked ways to do them. Mike was quickly directed to the "salvation station"( half a point for name, another half point for all the free liquor) The Xara rave camp had some trippy glow in the dark dance effects, but- I star for the dumb fuck who sprayed us with glow in the dark aerosol paint in a fucking unventilated room! As if there werent enough drugs floating around.

There was also music outside courtesey of the Seritonins, plenty of dancing, and even a circus complete with the oddities you just don't see at a typical drat kegger ( 1 star). I missed the BDSM workshop, but I heard it was fucking cool. The whole weekend time was irrevelant and sleep was optional. Mega kudos to Lisa for giving me an eigth of shrooms while her five year old daughter was there, running around and playing on the trampoline with the other flower tykes. Two more stars for naked jacuzzi time, when the Rockstar( who still has my Goddam feather) and another girl sat on dirty mike's lap, groping and making out with each other.

Man that's some ridiculous garbage. It's been a long time since I've seen anti-Semitic, homophobic, racist misogyny all wrapped up in one spot. I'd say it was satire, but the sheer volume seems to indicate otherwise. Having lived in SD for 2 years, I'm not particularly surprised. In my experience, everyone I met under 50 who lived outside of Hillcrest was a total fucktard.

Spamming, however, isn't the answer. Fighting fire with fire burns everyone, and he'll just change his email address, anyway.

You should instead make a formal, written complaint to the Dean of Students at UCSD. If this newsletter is for real, the student will get in some mighty deep trouble for it.

Words fail me. I was hoping that was satire; but I think Technopatra is right -- it's the real deal. This stuff must bring God to tears.

On top of the gratuitous insult to TawnyGnosis, the writers further injure her by implying that she would hang with these DWEs (Dicks with Ears).

Techopatra's solution is on the right track. Hoist them on there own petard. If you're clever, they won't even know what hit 'em.

Then let it go and move on. These guys are impotent little worms. Don't let them waste your time or energy.

You know that even offended me and I'm pretty thick skinned. That seems to be the common blemish of southern cal. I take some hits here alot of times but I can handle That.

Everything I've ever read from you TawnyGnosis has been not just a-o-k but informative. TP and WB are right about you taking it up with UCSD. There are currently several cases of people in similar situations such as yours that have taken it to court.

Mabey TP and WB are right by you just reporting it to UCSD and moving on. Unless you feel there is a defamation of character status involved. I dont know the legaleze but Mabey you should look into it.

After all these guys seem to be a threat, dangerous and of a terrorist nature. The internet can be a strange thing these days. What they are doing is really not funny in the least bit.

Might be crude and rude, but as it seems to be a paper by and for (dechartered?) frat boys, and you seem to be saying that your own name or photo was not used (the PDF bombed in the middle of downloading) , I'd just drop it unless it's otherwise actionable under tort law.

Thinking twice before encouraging mailbombing on the eplaya might be a good thing, too, even if it's to a bogus address.

my reaction is somewhat different than the ones expressed here already.

certainly, i agree with Technopatra that e-mail bombs and the like are a poor idea. but i have serious reservations about a letter to the dean as well.

what exactly would your complaint consist of?

"writing to inform you that i REALLY don't like one of your students..."

"writing to inform you that one of your students has objectionable opinions and interests..."

"writing to inform you that one of your students attended a party where plenty of illicit drugs were available..."

i was under the impression, from the original post, that the writer had identified you (incorrectly) by name, and that, I think, would have been actionable. but that's not the case here. instead, he simply thinks (as opposed to writes) that he can put a name to the face.

i don't think the writer characterized "burn culture" particularly well myself, but that's permissible...isn't it? do you really want this kid sanctioned because you and he see things from very different perspectives?

i'd say you have two options: either (1) deal with the problem head on, by writing a letter to the creators of this little rag; or (2) find your own public forum to provide a response and hope to find a community of support and solidarity for your opinions.

tawny: that the kid managed to contact you is creepy, but that's the world we're living in. why not simply tell him off in a reply of your own, and then block his e-mail from your list of recipients. or keep him listed if you want to continue the dialogue (which, I take it, you don't).

Tawny, I have to go with drowned_saved on this one, there is not much you can do specifically regarding the burningman article. However, that newsletter is chock full of racist crap, and the school might be interested in receiving a copy if this is a chartered frat.

Try to have some pity for these idiots, can you imagine actually living with that poison in your mind?

Why are you folks even reading frat boy garbage like that?

My take on it is the same as my take on Howard Stern. Ignorant, Neanderthal useless frat boys. The entire paper was a piece of shit, but you have to consider the viewers of the rag. I work with tons of frat boys, I tend to ignore them. You won't change people that think that crap is funny, they feel they "own the world" and that the world owes them something.

Exactly, which is why the response ought to be the same...CLICK. unless you happen to like the stuff, in which case you are free to view/read. get it? FREE...

the rag is full of hate, but i am disturbed that this is somehow equated with an act terrorism. i suppose there is a point at which words become weapons, but i doubt highly that this is it.

lessee - lives in san diego: check. lives outside of hillcrest: check. under 50: check (for a lil while, at least). woo hoo! i'm a fucktard. and so are 90% of all the cool burners in san diego (including the person who hosted decompression)! yeah fucktard city!

to put some perspective on this: the koala is ucsd's undergroundish humor newspaper. they've been offensive, and threatened with lawsuits for longer than tawney's been alive. (at least two years longer, based just on my own feeble memories).

and geez, it's the "hate" issue. of all the offensive stuff in there, you had to pick "she's got no tits" to get upset about? it's a bunch of college kids. of course they're immature, self centered and bratty. whaddya expect?

It sucks. Mostly sucks because it really isn't all that funny.

Some of the stuff is certainly stereotypical and marginally racist in the way it was expressed.

Bottom line for me is: fuck it.

I started reading it, what I read wasn't funny even in the most amateurish sense so I stopped reading it.

Whining to the Dean about such press issues is bullshit IMO - especially in a climate where civil liberties like SPEECH, ASSEMBLY, etc. are under scrutiny by the Washington/Texas cabal and the FBI/CIA lapdogs who're starting to take names.

Hell, it wouldn't surprise me to find out these putz boys are doing it stir up a discussion (albeit a lame one) centered more around free speech than offending San Diego's thin-skinned frosh masses.

Be careful what you wish on someone.....

Having been the victim of a nasty mailbomb attack by an ex stalking g/f, this is not something you want to be associated with. It can get real ugly.

There are a thousand other more palatable ways to deal with this but I'd strongly avoid any cyber-terrori$m approaches.

The more I think about it the more I belive something should be done about them. The way I see it , if nothing is done about them it would be the same as doing nothing about dumb dumbs that affiliate themselves with orgs such as "skull & bones" only to have these dumb dumbs years later become President of the united states.

Do you really want to live another G.W.B. nightmare again.
These are the same type of bratty dumb nitwits that cheat on thier tests and bully people. they are punks. (no insults intended to any punk rockers.)

I dont see what the diffrence is between associating theses stupid so called "news letters" with tabloids other than the fact that tabloids are more credible, and that has only become recent because of the law suits.

To do nothing mabey is to suck up to these idiots and let the rest of the world suffer due to lack of responsibillity to all involved.

IMHO of coarse.

Alright, so I'm back checking my thread for the first time. I think I was a little rash when I first posted the thread and asked for spamming action, but my sentiment has not changed.

All I can say is that I'm extremely sensitive to hateful garbage and DYB( dumb young boys) because I encounter both too much in my life. I pointed out the "got no tits" thing because it was in the article I was speaking of. It annoys me to no end that this horrible dweeb thought he even has the right to judge this girls body because it doesn't match the images that he whacks off to in his magazines. Of course, we are entitled to our opinions, and I'm entitled to react and defute the horrible assumptions behind them.

I don't think the answer is curtailing their civil liberties and freedom of speech, but I won't personally put up with people like this in my space.

I wrote him a letter along the lines of, " You don't have a clue, I'm sorry you attended the party because you may have ruined someone else's joy, I hope you get laid someday and then you won't have to take your insecurities out on other people, I hope you realize what you are propogating into the world, etc." I ended it by telling him not to write back to me, and then blocked his account.

This morning, he or some other "Koala" fratboy rapist internet stalker type had sent me a virus( luckily my program deleted it before I read it).

I was glad that some people had responded to this newsletter/group in a way that was similar to me. It really offended me that my family or anyone would think that I would hang around topless with yahoo's like this. I'd be more likely to kick their ass and hang them out to dry. Plus my family believed it was, which makes me really pecimistic about who they believe me to be.

Whew....ok I'm over it for now.

And yeah in a way this is like indirect defamation, because he called the girl assumed to be me, " The Rockstar". I don't claim to be a rockstar, and who the fuck is he to judge my musical ability without hearing or knowing me at all????

Also I *do * have breasts worthy of being censored in a hate-zine, so pttttttt!

I should have been more specific. I lived there in 1992-3, before the burn culture had coalesced, and long before I had even heard of Burning Man. There were some raves & such, but my personal experience of SD was laden with conservatism, racism, sexism, and homophobia. I had expletives hurled at me for wearing black, had eggs thrown at me and my friends by Navy boys looking to gay bash, had to take out my nosering because I couldn't even get a job at a flower stand with it in, was hassled at the beach for having the gall to try to learn to surf while female, and was nearly assaulted on 2 occasions when some frat boy who stumbled in to my local bar (the Alibi) couldn't handle getting his ass kicked on the pool table by a girl. Everything from taxes to traffic jams was blamed on illegal immigrants, and someone was running around setting homeless people on fire.

I'm glad that the scene has changed, and am glad to know that there is intelligence, sarcasm, and creativity outside of Hillcrest. But when I was there it sucked major ass and I hated every second of it that wasn't spent drunk.

like what DF? what EXACTLY would you do? or, more likely, since what i've read here seems to entail making "punishment" someone else's responsibility, what would you "have done" to these little pricks?

People...seriously...please...

In a liberal democracy which purports to value freedom, consider your options:

(1) you may speek freely in response to the hate mongers and, as i said above, work to build a community of support and solidarity around your sentiments; or

(2) you may choose to let so-called hate speech drift silently away into the ether in the hope that relatively few will rally around it.

you MAY NOT, if you want to preserve any semblance of freedom at the core of your community, sanction/punish those who merely offend your sensibilites. read salman rushdie's essays on censorship and free speech in *step across this line* for a reasoned (but passionate) defense of this position.

also, you MAY NOT sanction/punish to defend future transgressions which have unfolded, thus far, only in your imagination. to argue, as DF does above, that "something" ought to be done to silence or humble or humiliate these frat boys because they might go on to assert formidable (and abusive) power in the future is to accept (and acquiesce to) the logic of the attorney general of the US or, for that matter, the taliban.

and more (because the view from up here on my hobby horsee is so fucking inspiring):

the response which tawny desribes above seems most appropriate. she told the guy off, and blcoked his e-mail.

on the other hand, the matter of whether he (or someone else at his urging) sent you a destructive e-virus is altogether different and deserves a different kind of response.

one thing, though, and this may be hard to accept...
this kid ABSOLUTELY DOES HAVE A RIGHT TO JUDGE YOU AND DISPARAGE YOU (within certain limits). that's one of many things that is allowed to transpire in a free forum for self-expression.

if hurting someone's feelings were suddenly made illegal, the whole fucking lot of us would have to be locked up.

and last: the bit about your family losing faith in you is most gut-wrenching. hopefully, the damage can be repaired.

drowned_saved you make a great argument. I really would like to go into detail of what I would like to propose; however I am one to quote and to quote you would make for too long of an unessasary read.

So if I may take some time to properly think and respond to your post at a later time I leave you with this thought;

what I would like to do is not legal. What I think should be done is doable and I will write a short essay just for you later. I'm not at home right now but soon will be and will take the time to properly speak my mind.

"Revenge is a dish best served cold"

So true, so true.

My advice would be this, save all his press clippings, get all the issues of this rag you can find. Find any photos floating around of this individual in any compromising positions. Put it all in a file, nice and neat and store it with your important documents. Then say in about 3-5 years or so, when this loser is climbing up the corporate ladder, working that white collar job that daddy (or fiance's daddy) helped get him into, go ahead and email all that info to his boss, supervisor, clients, CEO, etc.

No commentary, no slander, no liable, just the raw, honest truth about what their employee/associate was doing a few years back on campus.
