CARAVANSARY

Caravansary - This year we will create a caravansary that occupies the crossroads of a dreamland: a bazaar of the bizarre wherein treasures of every sort, from every land and age, flow in and out to be flaunted, lost, exploited and discovered. This is not a tourist destination, but a home for travelers who come here bearing gifts. Amid the twisting and the turnings of its souk, participants will come upon an inexhaustible array of teeming goods and unexpected services. Anyone may pose as 'merchant' here, and anyone may play a 'customer', but nothing in this strange emporium shall have a purchase price — no quid, no pro, no quo — no trade at all will be allowed in this ambiguous arcade. According to a rule of desert hospitality, the only thing of value in this 'marketplace' will be one's interaction with a fellow human being.

Doug - thanks for posting that video.
I got a Doumbek for this year. I love it. Still searching for my own rhythm. But gotta tell you... my daughter came over for dinner - and picked up my drum - and totally blew me away.

Man, the Kazbus folks must be thrilled about the theme. We were camped across the street from them this past year. I missed the sound of their horn in the days following the burn. Sort of like a particularly lazy cow trying to get your attention.

yes, as it is a scientific fact that ALL drum circles devolve into a loose version of "Aiko-Aiko" after 7-10 minutes, without exception.

If you ever get confused about this, tip the camel onto its tail and the one hump will make the silhouette of a "D" (Dromedary) and the two humps will make a silhouette of a "B" (Bactrian).

If you do this, remember two things, first that an Arabian camel is the same as a dromedary, and won't tip to make an A. Also, that camels are notoriously bad tempered and don't like being tipped.

A camel is an even-toed ungulate within the genus Camelus, bearing distinctive fatty deposits known as "humps" on its back.

Camels do not directly store water in their humps as was once commonly believed. The humps are actually reservoirs of fatty tissue: concentrating body fat in their humps minimizes the insulating effect fat would have if distributed over the rest of their bodies, helping camels survive in hot climates.[16][17] When this tissue is metabolized, it yields more than one gram of water for every gram of fat processed. This fat metabolization, while releasing energy, causes water to evaporate from the lungs during respiration (as oxygen is required for the metabolic process): overall, there is a net decrease in water.[18][19]

All the nomad tribes meet each summer at a huge gathering in the North to trade goods, exchange information, and so forth. Not exactly a caravansary, but close enough. This doesn't happen until the last third of the book , but it is all a good yarn.

So the book starts, this totally uptight, anglo-philic American gets sent to Afghanistan to find a girl...
She (as the book progresses) thinks she has moral superiority because she is afraid. Total excuse for being a slut.
She got to Afghanistan by marrying a guy who spent several weeks being negro in America - several tribes are dark enough to appear negro - and again, thinks she has moral superiority.
(Can you tell I ain't grooving with the femme fatale's self rationalization?)
He goes through a wolfish winter in Kabul, where he realizes he's really a pedophile, and postures prettily.
Then he goes to the husband of the femme fatale to confront him (she is supposed to be missing).
In the meantime he is confronted with stunning vistas, and abandoned cities.
Then he finds a caravanserai, while trying to rescue two un-rescuable soldiers.

Then it gets interesting... :)

Then our anglophilic, pedophilic, American protagonist gets pre-empted to a trip to the great gathering. And along the way gets seduced seriously by the chieftain's underaged daughter. Has his jeep stolen, broken down to parts, and offered back to him for sale.
And sees more scenic vistas, sex and violence... of course.
While the same femme fatale of whom we have no confidence, takes up intercourse with the previously mentioned, Nazi war criminal doctor.
