CARAVANSARY

Caravansary - This year we will create a caravansary that occupies the crossroads of a dreamland: a bazaar of the bizarre wherein treasures of every sort, from every land and age, flow in and out to be flaunted, lost, exploited and discovered. This is not a tourist destination, but a home for travelers who come here bearing gifts. Amid the twisting and the turnings of its souk, participants will come upon an inexhaustible array of teeming goods and unexpected services. Anyone may pose as 'merchant' here, and anyone may play a 'customer', but nothing in this strange emporium shall have a purchase price — no quid, no pro, no quo — no trade at all will be allowed in this ambiguous arcade. According to a rule of desert hospitality, the only thing of value in this 'marketplace' will be one's interaction with a fellow human being.

"What is in mind is a sort of Chautauqua...that's the only name I can think of for it...like the traveling tent-show Chautauquas that used to move across America, this America, the one that we are now in, an old-time series of popular talks intended to edify and entertain, improve the mind and bring culture and enlightenment to the ears and thoughts of the hearer." - Robert Pirsig from "Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"

The original proposed 2014 theme was 'Silk Road' -edited for obvious contemporary cultural reasons. The change to "Caravansary" is a good one and made me think of this passage from Pirsig's classic book on values.

I finally read "Caravans" by James Michener.
According to this author, the caravanserai was a semi-sanctified place of peace. It wasn't good form to kill, or steal from others who were also seeking sanctuary at a caravanserai, which was a place of refuge from the desert.

That kinda resonates. Isn't the burn a refuge from the intolerance of defaultia?

Small world. I'm re-reading it, and I read that passage yesterday:
It was a rule of the desert that whoever succeeded in entering a serai was safe for the night, no matter what antagonist he encountered inside, and there must have been many stirring tales of blood enemies who shared sanctuary here under unexpected circumstances.

So now I need to find a blood enemy. :P

To violate that sanctuary is the true sodomy.

Remi, didn't you notice that few participants actually pay attention to the Theme? I view it as a suggestion for folks who fail to come up with their own idea. No worries.

Doesnt look like there will be interior access to this one. :(
Wonder how they will keep it stable in high winds?

I like the theme though.

The fact that "Its massive torso will evoke a tiered pagoda" leads me to believe there should be some sort of tower inside of the torso that one might be able to climb into.. (kinda like the Trojan horse from a couple years ago.) Either way, the idea of the man coming straight out of the dirt is neat. I didn't spend much time inside/under the man anyways. Just long enough to snap a couple photo's of his ball sack.

I just thought that was because the theme was recycled the year I went, and seemed to get a negative review from the burner community... perhaps that was the reason people weren't paying attention to it.. but if it's common for people to ignore the theme, then I don't even know why I'm visiting this thread in the first place.

I'll stick to my "event tickets" and "preparation" threads from now on.

I keep mixing up the spellings -- ...sary and ...serai. The ...serai seems to appear more often in literature.

I'm not smart enough to post pictures..

Ya, the second from the right on the Kazbus drawing..

It would (start) by looking like a keyhole..

I Googled arabian archways then hit (google) image's..

Maybe some one else can jump in here with idea..
