this year, I'm bummed because I won't be going this year to the burn...

it was by choice that I decided not to go...

last year was the year for me, and despite the challenges, it was a fantastic experience...

one of the greatest challenges was leaving my family behind for this adventure, which only benefited me...my wife is NOT a burner, thinks I'm nuts for going out of my way to engage in recreational moving, and is also a teacher who works DURING the burn...so, she and the rest of my family had to take turns trading off babysitting shifts with my 8 year old son, who didn't begin school for another two weeks...I am also the victim of the "educator's curse", wheras I begin teaching my high school classes just before labor day...requests to take time off during these first few weeks was always denied, and I'm not one to quit a good paying job just to take a week off...needless to say, it was an emotional, physical, and financial burden even before I set foot on the playa...(btw, I lost my job because of it)...

this is only a few of the reasons why I haven't gone to BM since I first heard about it in 1997...

some might think, why didn't I make going to BM more of a priority in my life?...
well, family and career always came first before adult playtime...

this is where CAMP ENVY came into my life in 2008 when I saw a live streaming video of BM, music from BMIR, and a chat room filled with people who want to participate, but can't for whatever reason...it was a way for me to connect to the other divergent thinkers in the world...

in the mean time, I have supported various theme camps and other offshoots of the BM community to participate in some way...I could participate locally and see the fruits of labor gifted on playa over the years...

I've helped to promote Camp Envy at the Los Angeles Decompression and on playa for a number of years, worked for Cirque Berzerk, lectured with the Black Rock Educators Consortium, volunteered at Lightning in a Bottle, and I now help with design and fabrication for The Desert Wizards of Mars...the DWOM helped to build the Mars Rover Art Car (http://makezine.com/2014/04/10/mars-rover-art-car/) and our latest creation, The Black Rock Observatory (http://www.blackrockobservatory.com/)...

we're a team who educates through science based art, and would love for you to join us...

anyway, that's why I'm with Camp Envy this year...

will you be joining us?...tell us your story...

But, what if I can't go to the BURN this year?...

Join Camp Envy..."you may already be a member"...

this is what we were broadcasting burn night...the only art car outfitted with broadcast equipment, and closest art car to the burn...
http://youtu.be/3_2of1whLRE?t=1h1m26s

and this is what you got thru ustream...
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/38081627

a lot of hard work has been put into making improvements in the broadcast...
stay positive and stay tuned...

if things don't go as well as you expect, just know that there are many people on playa working towards the same goal, in a challenging environment, and making it happen...they need your positive vibes just as anyone working hard to provide this gift to you...

but what if the stream is offline?

chat it up in the chat room, share stories, recipes, and favorite tickle spots, make some friends, whip up some margaritas and guacamole and have a block party...

PARTICIPATE while you SPECTATE...

Camp Envy Los Angeles is ACTIVE!!!...

What to do with the other 51 weeks out of the year?...build and play!!!

if you can't make the trek out to the playa, create and share locally...

this is what I brought to Los Angeles Decompression with other members of CE in 2011...

so then THIS happened...

the inner mechanations...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dweOvFp1hxk

in between all this, we helped a couple CE teams along their journey to the playa...

which is A BIG DEAL!!!...

many of these members never met in person before, most communication was online, included a few virgins, and started a THEME CAMP...

so, it just goes to show that you can carry on the BM tradition,
go out on your Zone Trip,
do some Urban Exploration,
engage in Recreational Moving for Fun

but, fer gosh sakes, just get out there and have some FUN!!!...

LIST of STUFF to REMEMBER about Your First Burn:

Even though I wanted to take twice as much as what I brought, I only used half of what I brought...
LESSON LEARNED: "Don't take too much shit." "Only carry what you need to survive, everything else is for playtime."

When people offer help, take it...it is a gift...and gifts are awesome...
LESSON LEARNED: "Receiving a gift is awesome and it allows the other person to also feel good about giving the gift."

I was in Exodus for 6 hours...I left right after the Temple burn, donated some extras to DPW, and endured it...I was tired and wanted to go to sleep badly...the pulsed driving was effective and it allowed me to shut off the engine to nap lightly...Sometimes, a person would fall asleep during one of these rest periods and block the line behind them...I never wanted to be THAT GUY, so instead, I made friends with my neighbors in line...
LESSON LEARNED: "Don't fall asleep at the wheel in the Exodus line."

I broke a few toes within an hour of arriving at Camp Ynot with the help of an ill-placed blow by a rebar-driving sledgehammer...
I couldn't do all the things I wanted to do on playa because it hurt so bad all week...
LESSON LEARNED: "Leave your expectations at the door." "Make it up as you go along." "Be in the moment." "Pain is temporary, film is forever."

more to come...

Camp Envy San Diego is a bit more laid back than Los Angeles. LA has the active builders The Desert Wizards of Mars. San Diego has, uh. Hmm. that reminds me, I need to go to the Meet and Greet in Northpark one of these weeks.

We have the cat camera most of the year. So there is that. Oh, and campenvy.com is hosted here as well.

now, all I have to do next is to review the note I left earlier about hosting your own private burning man...

ah, here it is!!!...it's a repost by an anonymous burner...

The Burning Man Experience....

This is how to enjoy the magic of Burning Man from your own home:

Pay an escort of your affectional preference subset to not
bathe for five days, cover themselves in glitter, dust, and
sunscreen, wear a skanky neon wig, dance close naked,
then say they have a lover back home at the end of the night.

Tear down your house. Put it in a truck.
Drive 10 hours in any direction. Put the house back together.
Invite everyone you meet to come over and party.
When they leave, follow them back to their homes,
drink all their booze, and break things.

Stack all your fans in one corner of the living room.
Put on your most fabulous outfit.
Turn the fans on full blast.
Dump a vacuum cleaner bag in front of them.

Buy a new set of expensive camping gear.
Break it.

Lean back in a chair until that point where you're just
about to fall over, but you catch yourself at the last
moment. Hold that position for 9 hours.

Only use the toilet in a house that is at least 3 blocks away.
Drain all the water from the toilet.
Only flush it every 3 days.
Hide all the toilet paper.

Set your house thermostat so it's 50 degrees for the first
hour of sleep and 100 degrees the rest of the night.

Cut, burn, electrocute, bruise, and sunburn various
parts of your body. Forget how you did it.
Don't go to a doctor.

"Downsize" last year's camp by adding two geodesic domes,
a new sound system, art car, and 20 newbies.

Don't sleep for 5 days.
Take a wide variety of hallucinogenic/emotion altering drugs.
Pick a fight with your boyfriend/girlfriend.

Spend a whole year rummaging through thrift stores
for the perfect, most outrageous costume.
Forget to pack it.

Shop at Wal-mart, Cost-Co, and Home Depot until your car
is completely packed with stuff.
Tell everyone that you're going to a "Leave-No-Trace" event.
Empty your car into a dumpster.

Read "Dhalgren" by Samuel R. Delany.
Read "The City Not Long After" by Pat Murphy.
Cut off the bindings, throw all the pages up in the air,
and shuffle them back together.
Reread "The City After Dhalgren" by Samuel Murphy.
Burn it. Read the ashes.

Listen to music you hate for 168 hours straight, or until
you think you are going to scream. Scream.
Realize you'll love the music for the rest of your life.

Spend 5 months planning a "theme camp" like it's the invasion of Normandy.
Spend Monday-Wednesday building the camp.
Spend Thurs-Sunday nowhere near camp because you're sick of it or can't find it.

Walk around your neighborhood and knock on doors until
someone offers you cocktails and dinner.

Bust your ass for a "community."
See all the attention get focused on the drama queen crybaby.

Get so drunk you can't recognize your own house.
Walk slowly around the block for 5 hours.

Tell your boss you aren't coming to work this week but
he should "gift" you a paycheck anyway.
When he refuses accuse him of not loving the "community".

Search alleys untill you find a couch so unbelievably tacky and
nasty filthy that a state college frat house wouldn't want it.
Take a nap on the couch and sleep like you are king of the world.

Ask your most annoying neighbor to interrupt your fun several
times a day with third hand gossip about every horrible thing that's
happened in the last 24 hours. Have them wear khaki.

Go to a museum. Find one of Salvador Dali's more
disturbing, but beautiful paintings. Climb inside it.

Before eating any food, drop it in a sandbox and lick a battery.

Mail $200 to the Reno casino of your choice.

Spend thousands of dollars and several months of your life
building a deeply personal art work. Hide it in a funhouse
on the edge of the city. Hire people to come by
and alternate saying "I love it" and "this sucks balls".
Blow it up.

Set up a DJ system downwind of a three alarm fire.
Play a short loop of drum'n'bass until the embers are
cold.

Make a list of all the things you'll do different next year.
Never look at it.

Have a 3 a.m. soul baring conversation with a drag nun
in platforms, a crocodile and Bugs Bunny. Be unable
to tell if you're hallucinating. Lust after Bugs Bunny.

So, you say you can't wait to watch some streaming video from the playa?

Don't want to go outside and breathe in the fresh air?

Instead, you would rather watch an endless stream of traffic pass through the quaint hamlet of Gerlach?

OK...here you go...

Here at CAMP ENVY, we use a lot of words or phrases in the chat room that some might find confusing...

Often, when we notice something on the video monitor that is unusually significant or something of significance pops up on the chat radar, we tend to focus on it and use it as a means to bond with each other...those in the know, know, those that do not know are shunned...

So, brush up on your homework, kids, and pay attention...
below is a link to the collective repository of intelligence of CAMP ENVY...
yeah, not much is there...but every year, something is added to it, and that's how we learn...

The City Not Long After is such a burny book. Which I ascribe to being written in the same time and place as the burn was being born. I wouldn't be surprised to find serious overlap between the author and early burners.

it contains wonderful photos of the early burner culture...a must have...

Thank you Professor, for all of the work that you and the crew do to send some measure of the playa out to those who aren't able to attend. I suppose moving forward, this will become a growing number of burners. The feed in 2012 was fantastic, and while it made me homesick, it certainly was a welcome sight! I had it running all week. I'm sorry to hear that last year came with problems, but hopefully this year will run smoothly.

I know I speak for a great many folks, both around here, and lurking about, when I say.. Thank you for the wonderful gift!

thanks for the kind words, burner von braun... :D

speaking of gifts, that reminds me that I need to get started on this years giftie...

many people in Camp Envy like to distribute little gifts to help bring the playa closer to others hearts...

playa dust, hand made necklaces and jewelry, wire bound stones, and stickers are things I've received from all over the world...I am grateful to have received their generosity...but remember, gifts are not always something you can hold in your hand...sometimes, being there for someone is all it takes...

I had been thinking, years ago, about the place where it all began in 1986...Baker Beach, San Francisco, California, USA...

Image

on a camping trip with my family, I made sure to stop there and take in the spirit of the location...and take in the history...

I shared some of that spirit with those who were curious about what I had discovered...

along with a sample of beach sand, burned driftwood, and a fold card detailing the first five years of the burn, I included a link to this web site...

let it load, turn up the sound, and this is what I imagined it sounded like...(note: not all links may work)

here's to many good times ahead... :coffee:

"TV Free Burning Man"

From 2006 - 2008, the TV Free Burning Man project produced Emmy Award-nominated coverage of the Burning Man festival. All content was shot and edited on site, in real time, throughout the event. Here, we present 53 minutes of select coverage from all three years, courtesy of the Desert Wizard, Justin Gunn.

70,000 people interacting with each other help to create over 4.9 BILLION moments!!!...
that's 4,900,000,000!!!...
there are more moments created just at Burning Man than there are stars visible in our night sky...

take a moment to GAZE at just a few of those 4.9 billion moments

what part of the world are you in, tummler?

there are regionals, precoms, decoms, and events unsanctioned that happen all over the planet...

heck, stick a sign in your front yard and declare it your Zone...invite the world, just bring chips and guacamole...

it's not an easy trek by any means...

It's not an easy trek if you are disabled, low income, obligated to work, obligated to family, unable to travel easily, or any of the hundreds of other reasons why people can't or won't go...but once you are there, nobody judges you and the desert is the great equalizer...but, as a principle of radical inclusion, it is incredibly challenging to be one of those "included"...

"this ain't no Shangri-La." ~ Flash

I did a quick breakdown of my costs to go to the burn this year...Google says it will take me 9 hours and 5 min to get from Los Angeles to Black Rock City on a route that is 550 miles long...I will plan to spend about 7 days in the desert...My truck gets about 15 mpg on a good day and gas prices being what they are, it's going to be a chunk of change...before I go, I'll need to do a quick tune up to get it ready to go...Most of the camping gear, I already have, so I will spend some cash on expendables (food, gifts, water, stuff)...

$270 gas
$380 ticket
$40 vehicle pass
$200 food/water/booze
$35 oil change
$15 radiator fluid
$60 expendables (kiddie pool/batteries/camping fuel/soap/paper towels/etc.)
------------------
$1000 total

yeah, it breaks down to be about $140 a day...in an inhospitable environment...and the drive is not easy...and it's all do-it-yourself...

so, why do I go?

because it's FUN!!!...
I have never been to a place like it anywhere in the world...
a camping adventure in the middle of a wasteland that serves as a majestic backdrop to a living art gallery...
once you go, it chemically changes your brain where you crave it all year long...
and this is why people go apeshit crazy about getting back...

but $1000 is a lot of dough...(decommodification my ass)...

before the BLM stepped in, when there were less than 1000 people in attendance, it was free...

it should always be free...

if you go to that much trouble just to get there, and survive there, in a place where nothing grows except your desire to return...it should be free...

"but, what about the roads, the cops, the medical tent, the port-o-potties, the water trucks, the street signs, etc." plus the other numerous costs of dealing with codified and controlled authoritarian bureaucratic baloney...well, that's where the radically self-reliant principle sets in, right?

the devil's advocate in me says, if you can't be out in the middle of a place where mother nature is constantly trying to kill you without having to depend on sanitation services or someone else for help, you may want to reconsider going there...it is inherently dangerous...going to space is dangerous...going to the deepest part of the ocean is dangerous...it is not for everyone...under no circumstances is a parcel of land we occupy one week a year entitled to be made safe for human enjoyment...mitigate your risk by limiting your exposure to the hazard through proper preparation...

the flip side to the above idea is that it is a city...as a city, it needs to provide the most basic sanitation services and access to medical support, especially due to its proximity to the nearest permanently equipped medical facility...I feel it is necessary to accommodate the 20% of the public who lives with disabilities by providing transportation of access to certain city features...I also feel people with disabilities should be included in the fire conclave, but that's a discussion for another time...

(The opinions expressed in this post do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Camp Envy, Burning Man, Burning Woman, or my dog, Abby.)

so, what are YOUR thoughts?...

if you want your special camping art event the other 51 weeks of the year, I say, make it happen...:)

in the meantime, it looks like something interesting is happening in Gerlach...

I can't see if that is an AVI or AVL file! Either way, they don't work!

the AVI file will work with most browsers (or VLC media player). The FLV is a flash player file that may or may not work.

Having playback issues?...

both file formats work just fine on this computer running a windows OS and a media player operating an android OS...

as suggested, download and install a media player that supports .AVI (MPEG-4 codec) and .FLV (flash video) file formats...

VLC player can run most common formats...(though it can't seem to run BMIR's .M3U streaming playlist file...grrr...)

click below to install the VLC player on your computer...
http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3001-13632_4-10267151.html?hlndr=1

I'm running the MX Player app through my android phone...it supports most file formats and codecs...(the VLC player app is hit and miss)...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&hl=en

if you're running an Apple product, good luck with that...I'm sure a genius at the smart bar will be here to serve you shortly...

seriously though, if anyone would like to post any additional playback support advice (especially on apps that can play .m3u files), that'd be just great...
