DJs giving to the community....... such a farce, only complete sparkle-serfs believe that. Why, when there is a disaster somewhere, a famine, a war, whatever, are there people giving to the community by providing food, shelter, medical care, etc....but we never hear about DJs without borders responding to some need....unless it's to "give to the community" at BRC. What a joke. If someone said they were joining the Peace Corps or heading out to Somalia to help with their DJing, everyone would immediately laugh at the joke. When someone benefits and enjoys "giving", when they start making money off of it, when they are getting plenty tail, when does their advertised altruism become that they are doing it for themselves? What is also hilarious is how the folks who lives center on dancing, really do believe that DJs are something special to Burning Man, instead of the dime a dozen endless flow that they really are on the playa. Good luck with your music festival of the future, but I like burning, man.

Maybe they deserve an acceptance of their apology, but I can see how it can be interpreted as a "The lady doth protest too much, methinks" kinda thing (I copied this for the next time I have to eat crow) :

"There's no excuse!!!"
"We apologize unreservedly and beg your forgiveness."
"Once again, we are deeply, deeply sorry!"
"....ended up as this massive fuck up, by us at White Ocean"
"...The fault is completely ours"
"...We take full responsibility!"
"There's absolutely no legitimate reason we allowed this to happen!"
"...words cannot express the remorse, guilt and sorrow, we feel..."

i'm not "absolving" them.

but i do accept the fact that fuck ups happen.......all the time....

"lost in translation"....that world and this world.....culture clash.....whatever you want to call it...

i'm not fond of the "BRO SAFARI" that "EDM" has become, they are the "New Yahoos"...swilling champagne, and "Killin' it"....

well, thats all fine and dandy in the outside world, defaultia, i cannot do anything about that, but in this small little microcosm, in the dust, we do things differently, and i can hope that it CHANGES these peoples thinking and way of doing things.

if it doesnt, may the playa eat them alive and spit them out.

i accept that they fucked up, i accept their apology, i will wait and see how things go before i pass judgement on a burn that has yet to happen.

and maybe, just maybe, the DJ's and the Promoters and the Various Music Biz Types will get the fucking Message.

Burning Man is Not for Sale,

and out in the Dust EVERYBODY IS THE SAME... YOU ARE NOT FUCKING SPECIAL BECAUSE YOU ARE A SUPERSTAR ON THE OUTSIDE...THE PLAYA LEVELS ALL PLAYING FIELDS.....FUCK YOU IF YOU THINK I CARE ABOUT YOUR MONEY....

This is a late reply, and I'm not into EDM, no I didn't know who this fella was, but I googled it.

The bothersome part is that he is a commercial show using BM as a tour stop. Obviously, he can't sell tickets here but the if you look at his website, the BM event is listed as if it were just another arena in another city. Is he really gifting this music or planning to profit from this event? For instance, will there be a giant logo with his brand in the guise of being a theme camp name, and expecting photos of the event to circulate on the internet? Krug champagne pissed off a lot of Burners a few years back by throwing an extravagant dinner in deep playa (and leaving the mess behind) so that it would be covered by the invited press. Is this more of the same?

Deep breaths, folks... we're almost there.

I've got news for you - lots of performers, ranging from bigger name DJ's and producers to bedroom DJ's and random street performers who gravitate towards the event... tend to list their gigs at Burning Man as places on their upcoming events lists. Many camps post lineups in advance (not usually as early as White Ocean's post, but usually several weeks in advance), and people who want to visit the camp are often clamoring for the info.

Camps (large scale sound and otherwise) also engage in self-promotion. Some of it's shameless, and some of it's deplorable. The one that bugs me most is a "rate your favorite theme camp" poll on a site known for data mining and adware (their secret gift to visitors) where people can add a camp name, and then "upvote" as well as "downvote" others that are already on the list. And from the responses, it appears that camps are organizing gang-voting ("vote us up, and then downvote everyone else!")

If you find yourself out on the playa, at either a big sound camp or a tiny bar, and you find that they're not doing it right (in your opinion), keep on moving. In a a few seconds, you'll be somewhere else, and hopefully connecting with something better. If you find a place where they're doing it right, take a moment to tell them that, and thank them for their effort.

I've kind of softened my own personal opinion on sound camps after my few years attending... but Robot Heart really makes an effort to "do it right", all things considered, in my opinion. They don't ever release timeslots, they encourage people to MOOP at the end of their shows, they work hard to line up lost bikes and clean the dance floor... I like them a lot. I have respect for them.

Could swear I saw Tiesto playing in a tiny VW bus fitted with a booth and some speakers back in 2005ish. Kept on riding because the music was too typical. Always looking forward to un-named musicians playing their most off the wall sets to the crowd they read at the time. That's what a DJ is SUPPOSED to do! Play to the crowd! Often the more intimate the crowd the better the set for those there. Nothing pre-planned, nothing pre-made. This is the essence of spontaneous creation that Burning Man is built to support. I say, keep it underground and for gods sake, play some really hard to find tracks in genres not many have heard of and make it work in the moment. That's magic.

For a lot of DJs out there its still all about the music and nothing else. If the DJ is good, they have the ability to create a musical vortex which can only be achieved by using electronic/digital sound. If you've been in one, you know it, and you also know that its a very special moment.. stringing a 5-6hrs set for a proper journey is art in itself, and if its done right, there are very few other musical experiences that can offer the same level of mental and physical involvement.

Here is an extract of an article that I read recently which captures very accurately what this is all about:

..You can tell Warren has really entered into his element mix-wise by this point, as he’s reached what I like to call “the DJ’s threshold of flow,” and the music has now taken full control (DJs all know and love that ultimate feeling, when you’ve finally hit a point with your mix where the crowd is 100% with you, and the vibe has been built so well that you can just let the music flow from there: it’s a feeling of escape where, in fact, the music is in control, and you are merely a mediator between a higher positive energy and your audience).

source: http://change-underground.com/nick-warr ... oundgarden

^ that's it right there. It isn't about being a superstar DJ, or having your track in the top40, or whatever, its about a musical experience..

But we have a big problem here. Big corps and business savvy people figured out that they can pull a lot of cash out of EDM, and now we have those "festival' all over the planet which do nothing for what I described above, or at least, very little. Having 90 minute slots for 20 different "DJ" is simply not enough.

The every problem discussed in this thread comes from there.. its collateral from a much bigger issue within the scene. Don't get me wrong, those huge festivals do a lot of good as well, but there needs to be some kind of balance..

Here is a good doc on it: http://vimeo.com/97549389

this thread was about THE LINEUPS BEING RELEASED SO EARLY AND ITS CONSEQUENCES....

so, until we deal with the fact that the demand for tickets is DIRECTLY RELATED to the LINE-UPS being released, all of the mamby pamby ethereal crap you speak of is a moot point.

the lowest common denominator of EDM is what sells, and is attracting the mainstream to our fair city..

by releasing the line-ups early, this only makes the problem worse.

^ why can't it be both ? Like I tried to explain in my first post, there is art in creating a musical experience, so just look it at from that perspective and its all good.

Now, all the bs that comes with the promoters, etc., .. well.. we have to deal with it I guess.

I understand that, which is why I mentioned the corporate driven festival situation.. I just felt like, in a way, the music itself was under attack so I decided to chip in.
