Can we stop pretending that all people join the military to protect people? That's not a major selling point presented by the recruiters. Most join for the paycheck or because they've grown up in a military family.

And this one came from a military family. He's been to the burn and his aunt would like to bring him out again. Do we have to rehash this every time?

Probably every page. That's okay, we could use the bumps. And for the record, while we are a military family and while we know the value of military pay and benefits, we're also fairly patriotic.

He went to Burning Man as his high school graduation gift. Catholic schoolboy, he wore his school uniforms out there. Hilarious. A girl stripped down and made him wear her clothes and invited him back to her tent so she could "get a new outfit". He politely waited outside her camp. Zoom, right over his polite little head.

The funny thing is I'm a Berkeley peace-nik, and think we are an imperialist nation. I probably said something stupid like that soon after I joined, but learned to keep my mouth shut. Have to remind myself sometimes. And then, that post, I was "oh crap, not again". Not that I've stopped being a Berkeley peacenik. I just have a wider appreciation of how complicated things are. And maybe I know now that you aren't Dick Cheney or one of the people who does need to rehash it.
