OK, I guess it's time to get off my ass and upgrade to general. I've been tech for almost 20 years.

General is easy. 35 questions and you're done. I'm going to start studying for my extra class. Hopefully I should be upgraded by the end of the month.

Go for it otakup0pe! It's super easy and you'll be able to use any of the ham bands above 10 meters and even some of the 10 meter band.

Ah! A blessed event has transpired! The FCC issued my Amateur Extra ticket at Noon today! (-happy dance!-)

And a bit of a puzzlement: my license was not issued as the standard sequential Kx5xxx or Wx5xxx, but as an AF5xx! WTF, over?

Another bit of wierdness: as part of the approval process, the FCC lists a "Red Light Verification" as part of the audit record. Really, REALLY odd stuff. Did I freak out someone in the Wireless Bureau or what!

But, at the end of the day, at least I'm official.

I LOVE the idea!

Maybe we can get Simon to design a really wild QSO card. A stylized Man with headphones and an iambic CW key. In the background an aerial shot of the City, and maybe a vertical shot of the radiation pattern of two H-polarized dipoles ("get your mind out of the gutter, Elmer. They may look like tits to you but that isnt what we meant. Really". Heheheh).

There could be MUCH mischief here, and a legendary QSO card too.

I'm trying to figure out an easy HF antenna to set up out there. I have a telescoping fiberglass kite pole that is about 28 feet tall with a wire dipole in an inverted V on it now but it's a bit big to secure in a camp type environment. People would be hanging themselves on it. Need some kind of vertical.

We talking 20 meters here? How many watts?

I wonder what a dome would do to the pattern if you propped the feed point up 20 feet or so above the apex and ran the ends out at a 15 degree slope.

I'm pretty sure at a kilowatt we could play lightsabers with flourescent tubes at 200 feet. Or at least test the warrantee on pacemakers and insulin pumps.

15 degrees might be too close together for that to work well. I thought I read somewhere that 45 degrees is the closest you want to do.

A metal dome might be a sufficient counterpoise for a random vertical wire. I was thinking about running a slinky up the pole and tapping it with the feedline about 1/3 of the way up and then just use my tuner. Wouldn't be perfect but I bet it would work ok.

Oops. My bad. I meant the downslope would be 15 degrees off of horizontal. Basically a horiz dipole with a bit of turndown in each side.

I cant imagine what a 15 degree off *vertical* inclination would do to the feedpoint impedence :))

WOW! I just got EchoLink working, and sure as hell, W7BRD-R in Gerlach, NV shows-up and works!

I will email the owner and see if they will leave this repeater up during TTITD. This would be REALLY handy for me to stay in touch with the home-fires. Sure beats dragging an HF rig into the dust!

Hello RADIOACTIVE BURNERS,
Back in 2012 I was HF active at 6:30 & Iris. Last year the noise from the big generators was so loud I could not hear my radio and I lots my brand new dualband HT. If I can get tickets I plan to do HF from the playa. My antenna is a 20meter inverted Vee and I use an Icom 7200 rig.
What about a face-to-face QSO? Say 19:00hrs Monday, Wednesday, Friday? Lets talk this over and firm up a plan!

Sounds like fun!

I suggest we first put faces and names together at the Meet & Greet and figure-out where everyone will be camped and go from there. (Always hard to do a real QSO-thingie when you're on Playa Time).

20 meters would be fun. Given the background noise, we could share the love with Iceland or somewhere!

Next year I'm DEFINITELY bringing some big iron and hope to have a BRC QSO card as well. I would dearly love to work 40 and 80 meters with a horsefence-type antenna and a couple hundred watts!

I guess I better figure out how to get my wire dipole in the air safely out there. 20 meters is rocking these days and it will be easy to make distant contacts from out there. I have an old but very good Kenwood TS440s HF rig I can bring.

We should plan on being on a certain frequency sometime before the M&G. Maybe 146.550 or whatever the calling frequency is.

TT: That sounds like a good idea to me. I believe 146.520 is the national simplex calling frequency.

That TS-440 is a heck of a nice rig, even today. Lots of mods out there, including a 1.8 to 30 mhz all-freqs-enabled mod and a 10 hz mod that could all be useful. (I have a bid out on eBay for one at the moment. I would be thrilled to get one, age be damned)

Now if I could just find a good used Ameritron 500w amp to punch through the QRM...

Yeah, my TS440s has all the mods and I also have the Kenwood desk mic, speaker, and power supply to go with it. Basically, it was my dream rig that I could never afford when they first came out. People tell me it still sounds awesome. There was a problem with some of the 440's with the display, it would suddenly show all 8's or something but there is a fix for that. My rig hasn't done that.

I think all the VHF frequencies are regular FM but they may have a trunked system on 800 MHZ that is P25. I found a list of trunked frequencies from 2009 that were not digital but I don't know what they're doing this year.

TT120, thanks for the scanner freq. list.
We use a 10x20 shade canopy as the main part of our camp. I use that structure to hold the mast for my 20meter inverted vee. If you have a good size RV or trailer you can use that as a ground for a vertical. Using a vertical requires ground wires and talk about a major trip problem.
Now if you are up to a challenge, How about HF SSB bicycle mobile??? That is what I am thinking of trying. Yes, I will also bring a VHF HT.
In the past my Icom IC-7200 worked great for a playa radio, just add a antenna tuner and some batteries.

I have worked in electronics for over 38 years and I hope to have a good solar system this year, if I can get tickets.
Let's talk this up and see what other ideas people have. Here is my E-mail: jboswell@nrao.edu

That inverted V sounds like a winner to me. The notion of wandering around the playa with a base rig on a bike is kinda kinky (in a good way!).

I've been looking at this Windom OCF dipole with an eye to using the top of our dome as the center mount: http://www.packetradio.com/catalog/inde ... jf86mare25

It would be fun to DX nightly on 40, 20 and 10 and have a QSO card that reflects the event.

I have a 28 foot telescoping fiberglass pole I use for my inverted V wire dipole at home but I have the ends secured to the top of the fence in my back yard. I'm not sure where I could secure the ends of the dipole at TTITD. Maybe I could make it into a sloper and use the pole for one end and my truck or something for the other end.

If I make a random vertical wire antenna, I could bury the ground wires real shallow and eliminate the tripping hazard. Between my tuner and the auto tuner in the radio, I can use just about anything metal for an antenna.
