Some thoughts of what makes a playa name a good one

Postby Packoderm » Tue Aug 02, 2011 9:03 am

Man, it was difficult to decide which forum would be appropriate to post this. OK, a co conspirator and I were trying to come up with just the right playa name for a camp member who goes by his given name. We want to gift him a name that pertains to his personality and vocation. It's got to sound cool of course. We wanted it to be short enough and have a "hook" to it so that it would catch on with everybody. The name should be close enough to a real human name so that it doesn't sound contrived. The name shouldn't be a name the person would give himself, yet it shouldn't be disparaging or anything like that which would cause him not to embrace it. We looked at a few foreign name translation websites. We still haven't reached consensus on what would make just the right name. Hard work this Burning Man business is.

If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't you can't force it.

Or you can run it through the Unicorn Name gizmo...

What they said. Don't overthink it, the universe and the playa probably have it already worked out, and will serve it at exactly the right time. Cuz it's cool like that.

It was several years before I had a playa name. It just happened one night while we were all high on the playa...long story that I've shared here before; I never wanted a playa name, never even thought about one, never even liked the idea of a pseudonym. But when the name came up, it was just the right one. I don't think anyone can just "name someone" by trying to come up with a name. But who knows.

Maybe he likes his name. In a sea of playa names, sometimes being just Connie is lovely. I'm the only one. Now if his name is Steve, then he needs a playa name...there are too many fricking Steves in our camp! Like the others said, you're trying too hard. Something will come to you one afternoon on the playa, you can present it and see if it sticks. I named our campmate Susan "Mama Sue" after she spent most of the week offering leftovers to people who looking hungry, handing out cold wet towels to people who looked hot, offering back rubs to people who looked tired...she's never had children but is a Mother to all. She didn't like the name at first, she was hoping for a name that's more exciting and cool, but to me she will always be Mama Sue.

As I mentioned in the opening post, it was difficult to decide on which forum to post this. I'm not actually soliciting any solutions; I'm just sharing a thought. I agree with what some are saying about spontaneity being a big part of the fun.

"Clyde" just works for anyone, male or female, young or old.

Only reason I picked a different name was because the radio protocols required something longer than one syllable.

I go by my given name. Period. If someone gave me a playa name & got others to use it they would discover that they could never get my attention.

Some of us don't feel the need for a playa name and your friend might be one of them. I carry the same personality with me no matter where I am, I don't need another name to liberate me; have you taken into consideration that he might be of similar mindset?

("ShutterSlut" is my photographer handle. My name is fairly common & it makes it easy to figure out which "Eric" people are talking about, but most people still use "Eric" once we're passed the introductions)

Point taken. I already suspected that it would be wise to be a bit conscientious when playing with names.

Some thoughts of what makes a playa name a good one...not giving it to yourself.

Some thoughts of what makes a playa name a good one...not trying to force one.

Some thoughts of what makes a playa name a good one...not caring if you have one or not.

Just make shit up. I've got like...20.
