Sold out and no place for late arrivals?

Postby pimppapst » Tue Jul 26, 2011 10:22 pm

Hello everyone,

we're a bunch of Germans and we're arriving pretty late in the week (Friday).
I was wondering if we would find any space left as BM is sold out? Is there some restriction that people can't spread and set up their camps as big as they want so that there is space left for the late arrivals?

Having all 5 RVs together and having a little camp would be a cool thing but I'm afraid not even getting some empty spots.

What do you think? Are we running out of space? How can we avoid not finding any spots except arriving earlier?
This is no option as we're getting married on Wednesday in Vegas and starting our way to BM on Thursday after we're able again to hit the road.

Any advise which kills our fears will be highly appreciated.

Flame on,

There is plenty of room to camp. I don't recall when the gates close. It might be Thursday.

Do you have your tickets?

Send an email to partiserv(at)burningman(dot)com to confirm that the gates will be open for a Friday arrival. As for space to camp, it shouldn't be a problem. You'll most likely be on an outer street, but there's usually room, and if things start to get cramped the DPW has contingency plans to add additional streets if necessary.

Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials!

And once again I learn something new. Why would the gate be closed on any open day of the event if a person had a ticket? With the possible exception of Sunday.

Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me.

That doesn't sound right . . . I'm pretty sure the gate is open all week. I have seen burners show up on Thurs. & Fri in previous years.

Ah ha... found it. The old gate sales were cut off on thursday. Sorry for the scare. :)

Q. Are the gates to the event open 24 hours?
A. Yes. However, the gates will be closed to incoming traffic after 6 p.m. on Saturday of the event, prior to the burning of the Man.

(However, other places on the site say that Gate is staffed all week, 24 hours a day.)

In any event, Friday should be fine.

If you don't try to squeeze into a camp on the esplanade on friday, you will have no problem.

Camp on the outer rings and you should find a place to do whatever you want.

Thank you very much for the info. Maybe the next time I'm getting married at BM so that I don't have to drive all the way up from vegas and safe two more days to get flamed ;-)

See you on the playa,

With 5 RV's arriving on Friday, aim for the back streets (I'd aim for the 10:00 side of the city- to your left coming in). There will not be anywhere on inner streets to fit that many RV's on Friday. Make sure you have some bikes to get around & you'll do fine.

See you in the dust!

They actually had closed the gates off on Saturdays in years past, and while I've taken a couple years off I had heard that the gates were closed at midnight Friday night/Saturday morning more recently. Depending on how that may have changed, and what time on Friday they were looking to arrive, it could be a problem. I'd recommend checking with someone at the org who can confirm.

GATE DOES NOT CLOSE

Postby capjbadger » Thu Jul 28, 2011 9:09 pm

Contacted gate and got the official word:

Subject: Re: Gate closure date/time?
Date: Thursday, July 28, 2011, 8:59 PM

Gate is open for business through Labor Day...the same credentials required to pass through gate on opening day will be required to pass through gate until after the event has finished.
