gnossos wrote:I hope the actual Playa isn't full of as many snobs as this. What a joke. No matter what you want to call yourself, BM is still nothing but a bunch of hippies to the outside world.. same as a Rainbow Gathering. What a silly concept... rich hippie snobs.

Half the Burners I know are living paycheck to paycheck, saving all year for their various expenses. The guy who said having poor people at the event would ruin the "exclusivity" of the event was 1) a complete newbie who'd never been to the Burn, and 2) was seen pinching pennies--like any of us--when he posted looking for a reduced-price airline ticket.

The Burn is not anti-poor. It is anti-unprepared.

I'm poor as hell but have always had the dream to make the journey across the country to BM. The hate I see on these boards is enough to make me wanna give that up. It seems like if I did make it I'd be disappointed by the people.

You sound like you might give up a little easily on your dreams. :)

ePlaya is nothing like THE playa. You might be disappointed in the people, you might not be. We're not truly able to tell you what it's going to be like for you, specifically. People who need persuading, coddling, etc don't do so well out there. They generally expect someone else is going to take care of them and are unpleasantly surprised.

You can (often) Burn starting at about $1,000-$1,300, depending on how far away you are and how you're getting there. Here's a thread where people break down what they've spent and how.

And really, I don't think we should be encouraging her to attend.

Although, I could be really nasty and call her "know it all."

As to sneaking past the fence, is the radar still run?

I assume IR laser for painting IR "radar"?

I was wondering if those thinking of sneaking in past the fence knew what was capable, and with old technology:

Rainbow Family doesn't need radar, they have shamanic kung fu psychics who detect bad vibes and vulnerable teenagers.

If they're going to scan the perimeter of BRC, I'd like to know how they'd filter the noise...

I"m told wearing strips of foil makes you look like noise as you approach.

yeah instead of a perimeter the CDC refers to the area around a rainbow gathering as a "quarantine zone"

Yeah that, and you have to launch flares to fool the Infra Red. :D

Carry an IR glow stick in case you need them to find you.

This is where I don't tell the story of the ex-Marine that I met this year who had successfully snuck in from the 11 o'clock direction and fooled the IR.

The best part was where he was biking like hell and didn't know there was a trash fence until he was 3 feet from it at 25mph.

So, they were tracking him and didn't go pick him up because they were still laughing their asses off...
Want to bet they were taking bets with each other about how far he'd roll when he hit the fence?

With the use of IR goggles aimed on-playa, I carry IR glow sticks with me in case I come across someone injured in the dark. Gives me more than strobes & signal flashlight to attract attention.

We don't know the wavelength of that sensor, but the resolution and discretion sucks.
It would be interesting to see that material used against a quality system, but from 2008, it's already dated.

And on a bike at 25 mph back-dropped by open playa...

Lol.. no. I've typed it out a couple times outlining how he beat the IR, but I'll refrain and delete. He did it though.

The CO wrote:Turnip (& anyone with "friends" like this), cut the following deal with them:

1-"I will sneak you into Burning Man. It will cost you $500, cash up front. You are not camping with me, and I will not transport any of your gear. Just you. What I say goes. No refunds." The remainder of these instructions is to remain secret from them.

2-When you have the cash in hand, go buy (or find free on the street) a nasty ass couch. Hollow out the inside.

3-The "friend" has to ride in the hollowed out couch, preferably in the back of a box truck full of fuel in leaking containers, the entire trip, no matter how long a drive.

4- don't let them out for at least 4 hours before you get past Gerlach. Do not stop in Gerlach.

5-When you get to road turnoff, let them out for a breather & bathroom break.

6-Head for the gate as soon as they are in the pooper.

7-If they manage to catch up with you, they have no ticket, nothing in your car that proves they came with you, and are not part of the vehicle that Lord of Ruin and his cronies will have to mess with. They're just some crazy gate crasher/stalker thats been following you since the turnoff.

8-Now you have $500 dollars for Burning Man, and maybe they will learn a lesson.

9-Fuck that guy.

That ^^ is the best stowaway solution plan ever! I read/saw a BM thing talking about how vigilantly they search for stowaways because "At $240+ a pop, people get inventive", and this was from a few years ago. If anyone actually thinks sneaking into BM is going to be easy or accepted, then they are seriously deluded.
