hubs for 2v pvc domes

Postby jenny » Tue Apr 20, 2004 2:42 am

Hello dome mavens and sharks,

I'm working on my first 2v dome for burning man this year. While I'm fairly confident about stitching a kick-ass dome cover this year, I have a few questions about the construction.

Looking around the internet I've found some incredible instructions for conduit domes, but I am not confident about scoring some drill press time this summer - so I'm thinking I'll stick with pvc. For my old 1v dome, I've drilled holes in the ends of the pvc and tied it together with a series of knots. (Which gives it a slightly off-kilter look.)

So my 2 questions:
1. Will a 2v dome be structurally sound with the rope-connection method?

and 2. Has anyone used a better hub for pvc domes for the 4, 5 and 6 spokes?

(Lately as I fall asleep at night I imagine beautiful plastic hubs, made for 4, 5 and 6 spoke connections that have holes through them to place a screw with nut and bolt to secure it. There is a custom acrylics shop on the block behind me to further spur the fantasy.)

Any imput would be appreciated.

thanks,
Jenny

This year I'm making hubs out of plywood discs (two 3/4" sheets glued together, then cut into 8" circles) and dowel rods for the arms. I'll let you know how it goes. :-)
