The latter isn't likely, and I'd be surprised to find out that 10k landsailers or land speed record seekers hit the playa every year.

Oh, I see. We shut down an argument with the typical needs-of-the-many-outweight-the-needs-of-the-few retort.

Cheesus, if you're gonna engage with a counter argument why not try doing so with something less pathetic.

I'm surprised that the 'America, love it or leave it' angle of argument hasn't been gleefully pulled out like some magical game ending trump card.

Leave it to Apokiliptika to bring some order and discipline! Now if they could just discipline the gate road into submission...

"Leave No Trace" is a slogan, a meme to create a culture, just like the 10 principles. The were designed to allow the event to grow beyond its TAZ period. It's an aspiration. It's a cult.

The ORG is retiring. They want to sell the business. No investor would buy it for what they probably want with all the risk and risky growth projections. Capitalism is based on endless growth. So they are selling it to non-profit.

How big and how fast can BM grow in its current location? To 100,000? 200,000? 500,000? By the way, what is the ratio of participant cars & trucks to participants, and the number of in/out and parked organizer, vendor & leo vehicles? Guess 2.5-3 and 200 - anyone have stats, is it in the EIS?

In comparison Coachella is 85,000, Bonnaroo, 100,000, Glastonbury 175,000. The laws of Nevada give a lot of advantages, but the transportation is a barrier. Smaller festival at the ranch?

How does Boneroo and Glastonbury handle it? Build a custom freeway for one week per year?

It's held on private land. There are five entrances to the grounds, with two major highways leading to the area, with rural alternate roads also available. Caravans and Camper Vans (we would call them RVs) also park off-site in massive lots, reducing the traffic going into the actual event area. Cars, of course, are not allowed into the camp areas at all. They can drop off near the gates and then must be parked in distant car parks with regular bus service.

And the live shows are now also broadcast on TV. When Beyonce performed in 2011, her performance was shown on the BBC and broke their previous record for most views of a performance.

Having gone to Glastobury for a week back in 2005 as a representative of the Black Rock Rangers, I was surprised at how much they do well and also how miserably they fail.

Where they fail is having 30,000 thousand (yes, THOUSAND) people 'volunteering' on one level or another to watch after the other 120,000 (2005 numbers). Trash is out of control as is the toilet situation. The land is privately owned and is actually the largest organic milk farm in Britain. The routine is that there have three events in a row and then take a year off in order to allow the land to recover. The small creeks that run through the property end up getting massively contaminated by urea (due to people pissing in the water) and giardia. People walk along walkways made of wooden pallets (due to the ever present rain and mud) and think nothing of throwing a 32oz beer cup on the ground 5 feet away from a staged garbage bin.

Their anti-hippie fence fence which encloses most of the entire event is a steel wall with watch towers. The wall is ~11 feet high and cost 11 million pounds to construct due to the thousands that try to sneak into the event every year. It's a bit hard to make any real comparison to Glasto and BM because in my experience Glasto is providing a venue to a very, very large number of spectators. BM hasn't gotten to that level of tragedy - yet.

Yup, that's me, lame indeed, I have nothing in the past that matters, just ask anyone.
But I do have a (predicably) penchant for the absorption of really bad dick jokes and references, just ask everyone, that counts for something, right?

Anyway, Glastonbury already has a "civilised" road system surrounding it, whilst our Black Rock Desert roads are basically deisgned for a few gypsum trucks here and there.

I think Jackie Chan actually does have a move like that. Or was it Jean Claude Van Damm?

The ratio of people: cars is 1.9 people on average per car - so 32,000 vehicles for 60,900 people. Links to BLM stats here http://burners.me/2012/07/31/condition- ... -the-blow/
