70000 in 2013?

Postby S9arky » Sat Apr 07, 2012 11:18 pm

I found this article and it was the first I'd heard of this.http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-north ... f_peo.html It's funny because I did a Google search for Burning Man 1993 and read this cool blog post about the burn with only 1000 people, and thought how cool it sounded I'm not sure about 70k though.
Here's the blog too http://www.carasik.com/ubu/BurningMan93.html
Sorry if these are old news.

Don't eat the dusty snow. Especially not on hot days.
Which reminds me. there's another reason not to go. All that unrelenting snark we pile onto newbies and burgins... We are nasty people.

Dang... I wish I had the artistic skills necessary to make a BM flip book... maybe a series of them...

    1. Stick Burner's Big Day: Stick Burner arrives on the playa. Stick burner builds a campsite. Stick Burner meets neighbours. Stick burner tours BRC and the playa. Stick Burner gets really BIG eyes.

    2. Stick Burner's Big Night: Stick burner has a few drinks and goes out dancing. Stick Burner puts together a fabulous outfit and goes riding on an art car. Stick burner watches the sun rise with some friendly Stick Strangers.

3a. Stick Burner Overdoes It -- A Very Special Stick Burner, Part I: Stick Burner goes walking on the playa. Stick Burner forgets water canteen, hat, and food. Stick Burner fills canteen with beer at a playa bar. Stick Burner does shots at playa bars. Stick Burner stays out in the sun. Stick Burner falls unconscious on the playa. TO BE CONTINUED...

3b. Stick Burner Overdoes It -- A Very Special Stick Burner, Part II: Stick Burner is lying on the playa. Stick burner is found by Stick Rangers and taken to the medical tent. Stick Burner wakes up embarrassed and tries to leave. Stick Burner can't leave because there is IV in Stick Burner's arm. Stick Burner laughs. Stick Medics laugh. Sticky hugs ensue.

    4. Stick Burner's Gifts: Stick Burner cooks breakfast for campmates and neighbours. Stick Burner MOOPs the playa. Stick burner makes art out of found MOOP.

    5. Stick Burner Finds Love: Stick Burner finds a friend and together they explore the playa all day. At night, Stick Burner and friend watch things burn -- the Temple, the Man, various Art, and a burn barrel back at Stick Burner's camp. (Artistic license: For brevity, these things all burn the same night).

    6. Stick Burner Says Au Revoir: Stick Burner MOOPs the playa, packs up camp, hugs neighbours, and leaves the playa. A tear rolls down Stick Burner's face. Stick Burner's friend waves goodbye.

It does not take much effort to find out what is happening with the BLM/Burning Man lease negotiations. A couple well-worded searches give amazingly informative results. There is a eplaya thread which discusses the 2012 Environmental Assessment, with links to the actual 300+ page report. If you wish to put the effort in, you can also find the actual lease agreement, exclusion zones, etc.

Since quite a few people have trouble reading a news article, this will be way to much effort...

I am not posting any links, radical self-reliance and such!

Yes, the number is 70K, but no it's not 2013. The 70K number is a 2016 target, representing 6% annual growth and beginning with a cap of 58K this year. If you care to know the details, seek out the thread discussing the Environmental Assessment, the PDF doc linked there has all the data and planning info you could want for.

From what I read in the EA/BLM docs, it's a year to year thing with the final population number being granted by the appropriate BLM office anywhere from 58k - 70k. I didn't read anything about planned annualized growth..?

"Under the 58,000 to 70,000-Person Maximum Alternative (Proposed Action), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) would issue a five-year Special Recreation Permit (2012-2016) for the Burning Man event in Pershing County, Nevada, with a maximum population from 58,000 to 70,000 people. The authorized officer would determine the maximum population within this range for each year of the five-year permit.."
