Secure Parking in Reno Pre- & Post-Burn?

Postby jspidersf » Sat Aug 09, 2014 9:35 pm

I'm planning to spend Saturday night in Reno and my car will be piled high with bikes and stuff strapped to the roof. Any recommendations on secure parking? Are there hotels that do a good job of guarding burner cars overnight?

Last year on the way home, we parked a similarly loaded car at the valet parking at the El Dorado, and it survived without incident, but the parking attendants didn't make me feel super confident when I handed him the keys.

I've never had an issue with bikes on the back of my vehicle, etc. I do run a cable lock through them though.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me.

In the years of my driving 6500Km+ for Burning man adventures I only felt comfortable when I was hauling an enclosed, locked, trailer. If it can be seen, it might be taken.

3 trips through Saskatchewan, Montana, Idaho, and Nevada were issue free. Again, the only things outside of my vehicle/trailer were my locked bikes. I never left anything valuable in my car and never took anything that I could not afford to lose with me at all...

In 6 burns the only time I have had anything taken was in BRC my last burn, during Exodus - while I was helping Exodus happen...

Anybody else have experience with finding a safe place to park in Reno?? Here's what I found in my interwebs research foray:

Sands: No go. Looks like they either have no valet parking, or the valets are parked in the unsecured parking garage. A recent yelp review says the new management has gone downhill on security in the garage.

Grand Sierra Resort: Doesn't sounding promising. It sounds like they've moved their valet parking to the general parking lot, which is far away from the hotel.

Interstate U-Stor Self Storage: This place offered secure parking for Hot August Nights, although it would be a bit of a pain to park that far away from the hotels.

Silver Legacy/Circus-Circus/El Dorado: Seemingly like the best bet. I believe these three all share an underground valet parking lot that is separate from the free parking garage across the street. My next step will be to call each of them and see how their stories compare.

Stay clear of the Sands. Our truck was tagged there last year.

Jesus Fucking Christ, just check in, drop off your luggage, drive to the secure lot and take a fucking cab. I don't think it's worth spending a lot of time on.

The Sands has an open lot where I can park my big ass vehicle that doesn't fit in a garage.

So does the Atlantis. Their smaller lot out front is also not usually full, and typically has some RVs parked across a few spaces. However, when I did the same thing with jeep + trailer, they left me a note with deadlines and threats unless I moved to the bigger lot.

Well, he hasn't rejected the Regency yet.

I spent the night at the sands with a window not fully rolled up (motor broken) and nothing happened. I think something got stolen off of AntiM's truck/trailer there once, however. Just because it's not parked by valets, doesn't mean that it's an uncontrolled lot.

How about paid parking at the airport? You could take a shuttle bus to your hotel.

Here are a couple of suggestions from reddit:

Grand Sierra: The valet lot is separated from the other lots and the area doesn't get much foot traffic. I wouldn't trust any of the downtown casino valets, no matter how secluded or monitored, because there's so much pedestrian traffic and theft in general from parking garages. The Peppermill would be my second choice. It also has a valet lot in the parking garage, and there isn't as much pedestrian traffic in the area as downtown.

The Plaza Resort Club: has indoor valet parking. Its a old hotel, but perfect for pre or post-burn stay.

To the Cryptofishist's comment, I'm not really spending a lot of time on it, but I feel like eplaya serves as sort of the collective knowledge of burners, and it seems like a worthwhile topice to collect our knowledge on.

You can park at the airport and take a shuttle to the hotel. Theres security bopping in circles as well as the PD. While not perfect, I have never had problems parking at the airport - I have had stuff stolen from hotel parking lots.

Your mileage may vary.
