Bike Porn!

Postby cherryblossom73 » Mon Aug 05, 2013 8:08 pm

or...

"Show us your bikes!!!!!"

or...

"Bikes to go with names 20whatever edition"

What does your bike look like? Did you do something cool to it? Can we see you across the playa? Show us what you've done with your two (or three, or four...) wheeled transportation to make it stand out in a sea of 60,000 others!

Hopefully most of us have our bikes done for the playa this year, but if you don't...hopefully there will be something contained herein to inspire you!

My bike: I'm a tutu kind of girl. Wire baskets on the front and back are covered in tulle. My "bike beacon" is pvc and aluminum with a little more tulle at the top. LEDs are woven into the top of the front basket and are wound up the pvc pole and through the tulle heart at the top for nighttime lighting.

My hubby's bike: wrapped with fur front to back with a pool noodle tail. In the foreground is our bike trailer with the "throne" where I sit to be chauffeured a few nights during the week. ;-)

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me.

Hey cherryblossom, how did you attach the PVC pole, if you don't mind my asking?

I've seen those bike flag pole attachments, but they look a bit flimsy! PVC seems more sturdy?

I'm trying to Ikea-hack a removable shade device over my bike (on a pole); my first thought was to zip-tie the crap out of the pole on the front handlebars, but the handlebars are an awkward shape so I'm trying to figure out how I might attach it to the back...

Hey Kylie!
Bike looking good!
Please be advised that your bicycle has "Presta" air valves on the tires (actually the inner-tubes) -- at least on the front wheel. Presta tubes are not common in the US, and American "Shrader" valve tubes will not fit without boring out the hole, which can be an iffy proposition. So you may want to bring a couple of correct spare tubes. You will probably need to go to a real bicycle shop.

You also want to buy an "adapter", which allows a Shrader air hose or pump to fill a Presta valve. It's a tiny thing that costs about three bucks. Ask the shop how to use it.

The rear wheel may have a Shrader tube, if that's the valve cap that is bright yellow. But it may be something in the background -- my eyes are not so sharp.

See you in the Dust!

ETA: And if that is a Shrader valve on the rear wheel, it is crooked and should be corrected. A severely crooked valve stem often leads to a tear in the rubber right next to the stem, which requires a new tube.

Sorry about the thread drift!

Wow, well I am really glad I posted a picture of my bike! I bought it from burners for 40 bucks at a garage sale. Now, I will be a bit more prepared in case I need some bike maintenance on the playa. I obviously do not know much about bikes. When something happens to my commuter bike I am so helpless.

Thanks!

Nice horse, tatonka!!

Kylie, I love the flowers!!

Elliott, you can thread drift any time you like if you keep giving good advice. ;-)

Machina, the pvc is definitely sturdy. It took a crazy beating last year and is still standing. :-) My back bike basket is wire, so the pole is threaded down between the basket and the back bike rack. We drilled a hole through the pvc at the bottom and used that to ziptie the pole to the frame right around where the wheel attaches. We usually put a couple of sturdy zipties through there just for double protection against failure. We also ziptie the pole to the wire basket/rack for extra stability.

It's not currently assembled, but I could get some detail pictures this weekend if you'd like to see it. :-)

Awesome, thanks! We bought PVC last night and are going to drill holes in it today and do an official "test mount" with large zip ties. I think it'll work. Zip ties are awesome.

Third.

Mr. Delle has probably uttered the word "hose clamps" every day last week in response to my questions of "how do you think we could make this work??"

And that includes tutus. I think the spelling's different tho....

Okay, so... the PVC totally worked. Actually, the whole thing worked. Yes, even in the wind. I biked around in the deep playa during a dust storm for two hours, and the worst thing that happened was that the leaf flipped around in front of me, acting as a sail, and propelling me along without having to pedal (which was SWEET). Other than that, it was pure, shady awesomeness the whole time! Lesson learned: you can do anything with PVC, duct tape, and zip ties.

My boyfriend made an identical bike, but also added a small sound system to his that played a 60 minute "Sounds of the Rainforest" track on a loop.

Next year, I want to add a misting fan/rain system somehow.

Jungle bike for the win.

Machina, that is awesome!!! I'm also glad to hear that someone else is already thinking of improvements for next year. ;-) I'm thinking that my entire bike is going to get tutu'd up and the LEDs will be all over as well. I can't wait!!

AC, your bike is fantastic!! I am so sorry about the thief, though... :-(

Is anyone familiar with this custom chopper? It was gifted to me at the end of the event, and I would like to confirm that the donor was the rightful owner. I have posted it under Found Bicycles also. Most likely that was the true owner who gave it to me, but dang... what if it wasn't....

Cherryblossom: Thank you so much for starting this thread. I am working on a flag pole now. I'm using bamboo and have spent endless hours figuring out a mount for it. I think I'm going to use PVC in the style of a fishing pole mount, permanently attached to the rear bike frame-- so I can make several flags and change them out with no effort. If you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them!!

Machina: I LOVE your shade structure. It's spectacular!! Would you mind posting some instructions? (Also, is it removable at night?)

Re: Bike Porn!

Postby hellolinds » Tue Sep 24, 2013 8:34 pm

The missing piece of my playa bike finally arrived from Singapore, and it got me SOOO excited about my bike again!!! Had to share it here. This is the only pic of have of my bike actually, ohhh well! Taken just before we loaded it into the truck. It was my virgin year this year & working on the bike definitely ramped up my creative excitement for the Burn. I don't think going again is in the cards for me next year as I'm getting married next Sept, but I'm definitely going to work on the bike and take it for spins around my city. :)

Image

Started with an old beaten up blue ccm bike. Backpedal brakes that don't work that well but otherwise in fine if rusty shape for a playa bike. I had no idea where it would evolve from there. The french horn & trombone are welded to screws so they can be removed if needed. I added extra padding to the banana seat & covered it in purple velvet, (handlebars to match). A bit painstakingly added the el-wire following the curves on both sides of the french horn, with the battery pack underneath the seat. I was torn on colour and couldn't find the right shade of purple for the frame, so I ended up messing around with some gold as well and was realllly happy with the result.

The best part for me was finding a little round speaker that actually could pump out bass and had colour changing leds in it to fit in the bell of the french horn. So I could have music bumpin' as I was riding along, and it faded between colours and lit up the bell pretty nicely. My boyfriend helped me drill a hole in the horn to stick the ipod cord down.

The pièce de résistance was supposed to be a teeeeny tiny modified bubble maker in the 'tailpipe' or bell of the trombone so that bubbles would trail out behind the bike when I pressed a button BUT it didn't arrive in time so I put an LED strip with some sweet effects in there and it looked pretty cool and probably lit me up better anyway. (Singapore snafu, although they ended up refunding me and shipping it for free in the end.) I still really love the idea of a bubble maker in the 'tailpipe' but after having been to the playa, I'm not actually sure how well it would work...would the mechanism get all gummed up? (What do you think?)

Improvements -
    1. Make damn sure the speaker is in there bulletproof stylee! :( I flailed the speaker on a particularly bumpy road over in the 9:00 area on Thursday night. We went back for blocks and blocks searching for it, but could only surmise that something with colour changing leds might have been scooped up by someone else? Moop shame!
    2. spring for a taller sissy bar. I knew the seat was too low, but damn it did kind of hurt my knee after some long distance biking
    2. get some of those pretty wheel leds that are so bright! those looked dope!!
    3. cup holder! I had a leather belt holder thing hung from the handlebar that worked, but it did not allow for easy access to drink on the go
    4. ditch the windmill for something cooler - it worked some of the time, but then was pretty screechy loud as it worked FAST
    5. uh, kickstand. duh. luckily with the french horn if leaned against another bike they would support each other perfectly and not fall

/end novel about my bike haha
