My cooler is oversize baggage! Freaking out

Postby Esteban Ohh » Wed Aug 15, 2012 8:35 pm

Oversize is anything over 62 linear inches. My cooler is 71 linear inches. Just barely oversize. United charges $100 per oversize bag! Each way!

Does anyone have experience they could share flying in with their cooler? How strict are they on the measurements? I think I read about people on here flying in with 5 day coolers duct taped shut.

I'm starting to think it might be better to buy a cooler on walmart online and have it reserved at the store waiting for me. It would be far cheaper buying one of these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-Xtrem ... r/14574676

Is that big enough for food, ice+dry ice for two people for 6 days?

We filled ours with stuff an are UPSing it to our hotel. A 70 pound box up to 108 inches length + girth is well under 100.00

Edit: But then I have a UPS account - not sure how their rates are for walk ins.

Just buy 2 or 3 of those and you will have plenty of space for less than paying the extra BS airline fee. :D

I'll second the shipping it idea.

Register with FedEx on the site and do your shipping label there.. you get a good discount. Take it to any Kinko's to ship. You can have it sent and held at Kinko's/FedEx in Reno which is right by downtown off of Virginia.

Rates are cheaper than you think. I bet you could get it done for $30-$40 each way. This last time I went to Hawaii, I sent my entire surfboard ahead of me for $40 all the way from Florida. Compare that to $150 each way on the airlines..

UPS charges a combination of weight and dimensional volume on large , light packages (a typical cooler would be billed at 30 pounds or so due to the volume even though it weighs less).

Not sure about FedX ground, but they tend to use the same rules and rates as UPS and if so you may as well fill it with something to bring the weight up a bit.

Another tip - we are printing out return labels as well so all we have to do is slap them on the boxes and drop them off after the burn. When you ship via an outlet they charge a lot more so preprinting will save you some $.

If you do ship it I would try to get it out today or tomorrow because it is 4 - 5 days transit time via ground service from the east coast.

Thanks for the post, Esteban. I'm flying United also and have status, but I checked and I am subject to the same size restrictions (though can pack up to 70 pounds each in 3 bags). I ordered a couple enormous duffles, but I may have to rethink those... Shit. Stupid flying.. need to live in SFO.

Whoa, relax there, dude. We're running a theme camp for 15 people and none of us are local... We've ordered the majority of our stuff sent to relative's houses in the area, but a ton of our stuff is with us in Atlanta, NYC, and Dallas. I guess we shouldn't be ambitious and try to contribute...

I think the point of these boards is for people to exchange ideas based on our experience and to ask for advice, which is what he was doing. If you just want to berate people for this, why do you bother posting? Ok, now I really am done with this thread.

This thread needs more Neelix.
Seven of Nine: These nutritional supplements are unacceptable.

Neelix: That's the whole idea. I've been adding Talaxian spices to broaden your palate.

i think Roberto's frustration comes from the fact I've been "burning since 2006" so i shold know better by now. well, 2006 was my first regional, and 2007 was my first and only time at the big burn, and didnt have to worry about a cooler back then. this is my fault for not posting in the Greeter's Station and introducing myself, sorry bout that.

and i should have reworded my thread title, im not actually freaking out. of course ill deal with it however which way, but i just wanted to see if others got screwed at the airport for going over the size limit by just 9 inches for example, and see what other people do when flying in.

@macglenver: i know what you mean, it is definitely harder for us that fly in to contribute to the playa experience, esp when (in my case anyway) the cards deal in your favor last minute to be able to go the burn. if i ever get hardcore about it i will rent a storage unit and ship my big art project stuff out there etc. its no wonder that i noticed in 2007 the majority of the art and peeps were from the west coast area like san fran, LA, etc. yea theres stuff from as far as europe but thats the minority.

anyway, fuck your day assholes and all that, carry on :)

You've gotten plenty of useful advice, and little time to implement it. Fuck mail order, I'd just triple check the airline rules NOW, buy appropriate gear TODAY, and start packing TONIGHT.

Two things we need on the eplaya more than that stupid image attachment feature -- a sticky thread on this bullshit, and rotating sig files.

Neelix: A lone ensign finds himself stranded on a class L planetoid with no rations. His only possession: a calendar. When Starfleet finds him twelve months later, he's in perfect health. Why didn't he starve to death?
Tuvok: It is a theoretical possibility that such planetoids contain hot water springs, which could sustain the man for several weeks.
Neelix: Hmm - but not for a whole year.
Tuvok: I concur. Logic dictates that the ensign in question would perish.
Neelix: A-ha! Hahahaha - ha! I stumped you! As a matter of fact, he not only survived, but his belly was full. Why? Because he feasted on "dates" from the calendar!
