Theme camps: how about forming a new festival?

Postby Not Here » Mon Feb 06, 2012 1:20 am

I was thinking that it could be cool if, rather than fretting, all the disenfranchised camps and art cars who don't have enough tickets banded together to start a new festival the same week as Burning Man. Opulent Temple, Distrikt, Deathguild, Disorient, Nexus, Suspended Animation, Animal Control, Dust City Diner...all on a different playa or in another remote location like a mountaintop or a beach somewhere. It wouldn't take a ton more work than it does to prepare for Burning Man, plus it would be more intimate. It could be amazing. Thoughts?

Maybe everyone should a) give STEP & the March 28th Open Sale a chance b) boycott scalpers c) if a & b fail, there will be an intimate burn in 2012.

Yeah, if we got rid of the ravers there would be absolutely no ticket problem!

Actually, most of BRCs problems would just go away.

I'm thinking you should start a huge rave somewhere else!

Q: Where is the rave this year?

A: Burning Man is not a rave, and has not had a rave camp since 1996. While our ranks include many individuals from the electronic music community, they are not the majority. Burning Man is an experiment in temporary community, and one that is radically all-inclusive. Yes, this includes ravers. Be warned though: If your principal interest in our event is centered on the rave experience, and you won't be happy unless you're cozied up next to an extremely large speaker, Burning Man is probably not for you.

Gawd really? I would say that BMan is heaven for Bass lovers that want to just cozy up next to a speaker all week!! They just have to have a bike, water and goggles really....oh and not expect to find pills at the door, other than that what rave tard WOULDNT want to go to BMan to the big camps and fartstep their life away?

I mean, Im glad that they forewarn people against it but it has simply become the hottest womp venue in America.

I have become disenchanted with the large sound camps the last few years. I used to stop up there for a few specific things but it just got too much, like a gigantic oversized fartstep strip mall on both sides. A ReALLY REALLY cool strip mall, but still.....It has become VERY hard to interact with people for me in those areas.

Many of those large sound camps have another home. Do Lab does Coachella every year, and Lightning in a Bottle.....

Seems a little cynical, but, easy to demonstrate by looking at a MOOP map for any year. For example, see the red?

You can't go off and do things by yourself! You need to get permission from the BMorg to be radically self-reliant.

@Token: I never really thought of Suspended Animation, Deathguild, Animal Control or Dust City Diner as rave camps, but ok.
@RedHeaven: Yes, all those camps do have homes, but I'm proposing that since they are unlikely to have the membership to pull off their camps on the playa, that we all skip the playa move together to another venue.

It's time to move out of our parents' basement. Let's let Burning Man reinvent itself. Along those lines, thanks to Hans for starting a new FB group with others keeping things positive and looking for new and creative solutions rather than wringing our hands and hoping for a ticket miracle.

Well, for starters, think of what you can do with the money you'd throw away on tickets.

I think it's important to distinguish between sound camps and theme camps that offer other services and gifts. If we're talking nothing but sound camps, knock yourself out, enjoy every bit of it, I'll be happy for you while I stay home. If we're talking HeeBeeGeeBee Healers, the bacon and hot chick shower camps, etc., I'm there with my tribe of psychics and tarot readers doing as much as I can.
The road of life is littered with flat squirrels who couldn't decide.

Not sure what you're on about. Any new "festival" (and I hate that word) is free to choose its own theme and rules. Or not.

Okay, we'll do that. Just for you. It doesn't look that extravagant. The base may be made of hay bales, the neon will be EL wire, the fire will be from tiki torches, but it will be roughly the same idea.

@Cryptofishist: Are you laughing about the scale? This doesn't have to be 50,000 people. It would be even better if it were only 5,000 really awesome people. Are you laughing about building all the stuff you see at Burning Man? Who do you think builds it? We all do. I'm suggesting that everyone build the same things they planned to build on the playa this year, but in a different place. How hard do you think it would be to find a dusty town somewhere in NV (or maybe even in another country) that wouldn't mind having a few million bucks pass through its local economy?

Yes @mshaman: ALL of the artists and camps who don't receive enough tickets for their crews. There will be many.

And @Token, those are basic propane cannon. You can find instructions online. Takes about an hour to put one together. Zeke and I will make sure to have a few on hand for you.

Hey Not Here, we're holding tight till the end of March to see what we can work out, but there are a few of our large camp brethren who may have already thrown in the towel. I forwarded your link to them. And when people talk about theme camps cancelling this year because not enough members could secure tickets, theme camps many times include arts groups. For example the kinetic arts theme camp is the group that brought El Pulpo (the flaming octopus) - and they received 1 ticket out of 12. You cannot just substitute random new Burning Man goers into that mix and arrive with those sorts of art projects.

And I agree, we already have the propane cannons.

Sorry, I didn't mean that you didn't include arts groups. I just think some people think of theme camps as only either sound camps or massage camps or bacon camps or what have you. I should have used a separate post to point that out.

I cannot join a commune. I have commitments in the default world community. A summertime commune would be cool, but it looks like they do not allow children, and my son is a big part of my life.
