Goggles - What do YOU use?

What to wear? What not to wear? Where to find and how to make anything from goggles to fantastic pieces of playawear.

Those are the ones I was looking at. Seems like a wide field of vision, and they'd keep the dust out of my eyeballs (<---contacts wearer). Yeah?

I have a little pair, and I like how small they are to tote around, but I don't like how they feel, right up close to my eyeballs.

These popped up while I was looking at stuff. I have in my notes from last year "different goggles for day and night," so the clear and dark lenses are wanted, and I don't see any foam or vents around the face, so it seems like they might keep dust out alright...

(This is the first year out of five I'm making an earnest attempt to find a decent pair.)

I have a pretty small head/face and these goggles fit quite snug. Since they're designed to keep sawdust out of your eyes I'm pretty they will hold up well against dust. The air vents are all inward facing to prevent any material from getting in your eyes.

My wife and I used these last year. She wears contacts and had no problem with dust at all. We each had a pair of the smoke and the clear. Extremely comfortable and the field of vision is unlike any goggle I've ever worn. Zero distortion too. They don't come with any kind of protection so just grab an old athletic sock for each one.

Unless you carry a compass during a whiteout and know how to use it, sit it out. The goggles are primarily for protecting your eyes from the dust...seeing is secondary.

This may sound like a joke, but it's true. I remember a night time whiteout when the compass that someone in our group had on their backpack was our only chance to find back to the man, from where we went slowly from light post to light post to the esplanade. Without a compass, there was no way to telling which way is home.

Regaring Birdz: I use Birdz Eagle goggles, served me well for 6 years now (not the same pair, did need to replace some).

I hate having to spend money on two, though :? . I tried on my little fold-in-half pair I got on the side of the road last year and instantly remembered why I didn't like them: yellow lenses. The tiny size was super nice, though, didn't have to have a bag with goggles in it bagging around from my hip belt (I hate backpacks).

Completely side issue, and you've simply reminded me of this in myself, I'm not saying you're like this...

Ever notice how some things you cheap out on and some things you spend the cash right away? That could be an interesting discussion.

quick tip!

the spires on the promenades leading from the man to 3oclock and 9oclock, as well as to the temple, will have 2 lanterns each (or, two hooks for lanterns) these are called 'lesser spires'

the spires on the promenade leading from center camp to the man have 4 lanterns each (or, four hooks for lanterns) these are called greater spires.

...no? I try not to do either, and spend what little money I have wisely - on things I know now, that I need, like good goggles! Knowing that two pairs would be the most beneficial doesn't magically make the money appear, though.

I will probably just end up going with the foldy yellow suckers I already have, and saving the budget funds for things like, oh, the plane ticket (egads) and food. It's just plumb fun to "window shop" and what-if. 8)

Like I say, it wasn't specifically directed at you. And we all have different skills, income, tolerance for imperfect work-arounds, needs, which govern how we get wherever we're going.

ive cheaped out on goggles every single year.

using those cheap ass $3 ones like from the hardware store that you probably wore in chemistry class.. uncomfortable, got scratched/dirty easily but they did fit over sunglasses

this year i SPLURGED!

i paid $12 on some ski goggles.. they are tinted enough to probably be OK without sunglasses.. and OK at night.

we shall see.

im bringin the trusty old cheapy $3 ones along with just incase ;-)

(but damn are those ski goggles comfortable)

Just found these, figure for four bucks each I could get the snazzy rainbow lens and a clear one, for night.

Probably have a pretty shitty foam part around the face, I'm thinking (I mean...so cheap).

On the not so cheap, these

Got a pair of these off of Amazon. They're super comfortable and have an incredibly tight seal around your face. Definitely a steal for $10

I got two pairs, one is the DeWalt but I can't remember if they're the clear or shaded. I think clear...I do love brazenly strolling through a midnight white-out.

I used to ride a quad/dirt bike and I wear regular glasses and I'm blind as a bat without them. So the goggles go over my glasses so I'm just drunk driving around on my bike at night and not a blind drunk, just a regular party drunk! They worked great and kept the sand out of my eyes!

In a dust up during the day, darker lenses don't help much, so I decided to forgo the two colors of lenses, or two sets of goggles this year. I brought some lab dust goggles, and although the foam seals around the sides get bent in or out, and don't seal well, have gaps between the plastic lens and the foam also, they are light, and I did carry them more, and when I needed them, they were adequate. They were also inexpensive, at ten bucks. I'm finding better design, and cumbersome (like the uv snow goggles I brought last year,) does less for me since it tends to stay in camp. It's a work in progress, as with all things gear.

The best goggles are the ones you have with you during a dust storm. And for those of us unworthy burners yet to evolve reptilian nictitating membranes to blink away the dust, some sort of goggles is better than no goggles.
