Not sure how to phrase this- advice on making my outfit safe

Postby singlemind » Mon Aug 02, 2010 6:19 pm

Ok- (to be clear I'm a first timer and do not quite know what to expect) I'm constructing a helmet with a good bit of antlers on it-) this does involve poky bits that I intend to sand down a bit. At night I would like to light up the edges, maybe with el wire. Any ideas, advice? I would just really hate someone to accidentally run into me with say, a bike or something.
thanks!

Ah, the condition of being someone without blinkies or glowsticks or el wire at night is called "Being a darkwad."

as long as you have lights on 'em, you should be fine. Just remember you have them on when you go to hug somebody!

Just wear an outer layer that burns quickly and at relatively low temperature. Maybe something out of paper. When you hear a bicycle coming, just set yourself on fire.

Works every time.

So you seem to be worried about poking someone's eye out with your horns. Just wrap them with yellow caution tape.

There is a much treasured Playa proverb:

Safety Third

Think of that when you are flying down the four story AstroTurf slide wearing a skirt and antlers.

I like seeing dangerous things on the playa. Helps balance all the hippie/raver bullshit.

I don't light up much at night. I just watch where I'm going.

A string of solar lights would be my first idea. Glow-in-the-dark paint. Depends on if you want stuff permanently attached, budget, etc.

Glow in the dark paint would be awesome. I would certainly look twice if I saw some disembodied glowing antlers coming at me in the dark.

Too bad glow in the dark paint is so weak. It glows briefly and its pretty pale.

I'd go with the elwire.

Rusted, good to know. I was thinking of using glow in the dark paint for another project.

those antlers brought back a childhood memory of my dad FINALLY getting an elk after years of fruitless hunting trips. He came home with the head lashed to the front of his old Jimmy and left it there proudly until flies began buzzing around and my mom insisted he take it down. I remember staring over his shoulder in the garage as he pulled it's teeth and put them into a baggie so I could take them to school for show and tell. I still remember the sound they made as he pulled them out. Strangely, I don't recall ever seeing the rack after that. I guess it didn't go with the 70's decor in our tract house...

the summer sausage was pretty good though.

Thanks for the tips and tricks!
I picked up some el wire, and am thinking alot about the spontaneous being on fire bit.

You can quickly "re-charge" glow in the dark paint by exposing it to UV light briefly. With a blacklight for example.

...glue razor blades to the ends of the antler...not at the point but about an inch and a half down from the point.
