Maybe I just have a bad additude

If you can't bring what you need for a week to TTITD.. Maybe you should stay the fuck home.. If you have special needs, cut back on the art, gifts and customs.. Fill you special needs and bring it on..

What the burr is under my saddle is people wanting to have there comfy needs delivered to them after they have set camp.. Water to a RV, RV dump, Fuel for the generator and a host of other things..

I think it's still being self-reliant if you set it up ahead of time and have a backup plan. It's sort of like an artist group having a support camp. Water and fuel delivery keeps the big camps, art, and mutant vehicles going. This isn't a biosphere experiment; water is always being trucked in to keep the roads watered for example.

Must be nice to be so close. Able to drag all your gear a short distance. And then snipe at anyone else who doesnt do it your way. Do you do all your own setup or do you have help? Did you make your tent/hut/yurt/dome or did someone else? How about your stove? Where does your personal "self-reliance" stand compared to the guy who hitch hikes from the bus stop after having flown in from France with nothing but a backpack?

Self reliance isnt an absolute. It has degrees. And yes, one of those is staying home. Feel free to exercise that option.

Why do you even give a shit? It isn't a test. it's a camping trip. With art and music.

the last supplies are 125 mile south of Gerlach.. That is not to far to haul all your shit.. There are no large cities between my home and the playa. So I dial back and make room for what I will need.. next thing will be some one having a mobile home hauled out and set up at BM.

You don't have a bad attitude. Not at all.

It's a camping trip with art, fire and music. A few creature comforts are nice - if you can afford them and can organise them - but they are not essential.

If you rocked up with a small tent, sleeping bag, water, a massive box of cliff bars, a slab of booze, goggles, bandana, warm clothes and a way of lighting yourself up at night you would be perfectly fine on the playa. You don't NEED anything else. Everything else is just creature comforts. The only real hassle is getting enough water out there for yourself - everything else fits into a backpack.

A lot of Americans are just soft. Just saying.

That's pretty much all I had my first year. I'm grateful to know I can do it.

I AM HARD LIKE ANIMAL.

. . . Among new people, I think some of it is a weird anticipatory keeping-up-with-the-Jones's thing. The playa's a weirdly glam place once people are done setting it up, and new folks think you've gotta Burn in high style, or no one will talk to you.

There's a certain amount of self-selection for anyone coming over seas. You're already unusual if you cross the water to go camping.

Well, it occurred to me that sometimes people don't mean unusual in the nice way.

Here we have a classic case of an American not getting "Australian" humour.

In my view unusual is always a complement.

Hey now! I get most Australian humor.

I'm just used to it being more profane.

I suppose that if you can afford to have the posh RV and chefs with a full gourmet kitchen and everything else brought in and set up for you then that is still being self reliant. You're still getting the job done, just in a different way than most of us.

I personally like doing things myself and wouldn't do it like that even if I could afford to but then, I'm a little wierd so I can only speak for myself.

I love the playa. And one of the things I love about it is the total over-the-top weirdness that some people bring out there. I love that people get together and do shit so wacky that it's jawdropping. Give out popcorn. And then give dental floss to clean the teeth. Where else on earth would this exist? (At least that I'd hear about it.)

But I am seeing what I love disappear, and becoming blandized by the big projects that are all sort of beginning to look the same. Especially on their kickstarters... Ooooh, we gotta give out key chains. Ooooh, we gotta post a video.

Frankly, the way I see it is as long as your lack or self reliance doesn't affect other people you can do whatever you damn well please. As long as you have enough water and a bit of food you can survive for the week. You talk about people hitchhiking in from France with nothing but a backpack, most people in that situation have a plan for someone else to have brought supplies for them and if not they shouldn't have traveled all that way to spend a week in a desert.

You shouldn't treat Burning Man any different than another camping trip. Know what you need to survive and bring it. If you can afford to bring more by all means do it, but not everyone can.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

which is Exactly what you did in 2011. organised a lift for yourself, each year you get a little more ambitious and do it off your own back
i think a lot of people are forgetting the self reliance part - kickstarter and the like are great but please don't rely on them to make your project work. I notice a lot are open ended so whatever funds they get are given to them, instead of target driven so if they dont get the target then it doesn't happen this makes me think it is simply a way to get more cash
