hoow to lock your rented porta pottie?

Postby veleda » Thu Aug 05, 2010 7:05 am

Hey everyone!

I'm renitng 2 portas for my camp this year. We did this the first time last year but we had a lot of problems with the locks getting stolen.

Anyone have any good ideas on making sure the locks can't come off?

you can get locks with attached lanyards/chains.
Or, do it yourself

but, it seems they were not getting put back?
if locked, it'd seem hard to steal them.

Um. First off do a survey of the camp now. Tell them what each additional service will cost and how much of that they will have to pay. Maybe even take a deposit to be given back at the end of the event. Also, put up a sign inside the porta potty reminding them. Attach with duck tape, that comes off enough for the company to be okay with it. (Remember to take it off at the end of the event.) That's where I'd start.

Use a combination lock. Tell everybody else the wrong combination.

Ya. We have a big camp and we found last year our locks were just disappearing.

So here are the possibilities.

1. Some of your campmates either didn't like the locks or though it was funny to toss them.

2. LEOs discovered your potties and used bolt cutters on them nightly to drop a load.

3. DPW folks were bored and cut the locks off.

4. JOTS service guys had them on their route and serviced them but were pissed that no one was there to unlock them.

Now figure out a way to deal with these possibilities for this year.

Also be aware that your lousy camp placement this year puts you next to the absolutely worst potties in BRC. Center Camp cafe tends to be very laxative and diuretic for visitors all night long.

In our experience missing locks seems to have stemmed from people only changing the last digit/letter of the combination. Someone in a neighboring camp that didn't feel like walking all the way to the pots would go over and use ours. We had some locks disappear but once we told everyone to completely scramble the combo, that stopped.

We use keyed locks and each camp in the village gets some keys issued and have for the past three years and will do so again this year.

We have had no problems with locks going missing or pots being being left unlocked.
