Electrolyte balance for vegetarians?

Postby orangepeelmoses » Mon Aug 19, 2013 10:29 am

Bacon is popular electrolyte imbalance prevention for carnis,
curious what salty foods vegetarians employ...?

Spanks in advance:)

Salt works on a fundamental level.

Pickled stuffs are very good.

Any number of brand name electrolyte drinks don't have no meat in them.

I keep a salt shaker on me, and any time I think of it *POW*! I knock back a quick shot of it.

Vitalyte is the only electrolyte nonsense I bother with. I've converted many a burner.

Search the board for electrolytes. You need sodium, chlorine, and potassium. Bacon and table salt do not provide potassium. Nothing wrong with throwing in some trace minerals.

potatoes are a good source of potassium

1 medium potato provides 25% of the suggested daily potassium !

1 serving of peanuts about 10%

I also use Vitalyte.

Add it to some water and forget about it.

Since my degree of hunger and diet vary so much on the playa, I would not want to have to rely on eating certain foods every day for essential electrolytes.

Cliff bars are pretty good for the vitamins and minerals. I would not rely on them alone though.

Pedialyte! I'm not kidding. WAY better than gatorade. Brought it last year and felt SO good after taking a nice swig.

Try coconut water! It's packed with electrolytes, rich in potassium, cools body temperature, and even has a bit of sodium.

My cows do quite well with a simple salt lick.

But a simple salt lick block is routinely loaded with Calcium, Potassium, Sulfur, Cobalt, Iodine, Selenium, Molybdenum, Manganese, Zinc, Copper, Phosphorus, Iron, and other trace minerals/vitamins (A/D) as well as the Sodium.

So yes a simple salt lick would be a welcome addition!

http://www.sportsci.org/traintech/glycerol/rar.htm
Summary. Extra water ingested with glycerol is held in the body for several hours and may enhance performance by a few percent in events lasting more than an hour in hot and humid conditions. Headaches, blurred vision, and stomach upsets are side effects for some athletes who take too much too quickly. More research is needed to determine whether adequate intake of a sports drink containing salt and carbohydrate gives similar gains in performance.

Yeah, but vegetarians aren't going to drink alligator blood.
