The Mancycle Project

The Mancycle Project

Postby FMRL » Wed Jul 06, 2011 5:31 pm

Hi All!

I am posting on behalf of a SoCal artist who was really inspired by his first Burn last year and the theme this year to create... The Mancycle!

Image

It is at roughly 80% completion, but the project would greatly benefit from your support to get it radically illuminated and transported to the Playa.

Thanks for looking!

So, what's it do? Are you giving rides? Maybe you're getting hits, but you haven't had a reply in almost 5 hours, give the people some more specifics, your dreams for the piece or something, a bit of story for us to chew on.

Has it gotten approval from the DMV?

On your kickstarter page it says that it will have flames....where?

DETAILS!!

Thank you guys for the interest, I realize now I was somewhat lacking in details!

I should've mentioned that it is planned to seat 3 plus the driver, and rides will be provided for anyone. Crypto - you'll probably appreciate how easy it will be to mount/dismount the two lower seats on the rear of the vehicle, as there will be handrails to accommodate individuals with disabilities to lift themselves to the seats. This was inspired by the fact that last year our shuttle cart provided some fantastic playa tours for some very grateful Burners who couldn't very effectively walk/bike themselves around to see the art in the deep playa.

OneEye - the flames will be a simple whistle valve that extends straight up behind the drivers seat to a height of 15' off the ground, provided we get approval for that portion. We do have preliminary approval from the DMV as an Art Car with a day permit, but the real goal of the kickstarter is to get it brilliantly lit with red and white LEDs for a night permit and add the flame jet.

As for the dream for the project, eventually we would really like to convert the cart that we have into a giant red wagon, and construct a massive swing-set to round out our childhood toy themed interactive art piece - though those will have to be next year. Please check out the video of Tony on kickstarter explaining how he was inspired to get this tricycle rolling.

Ok Elliot, that trike is amazing! Did it have some kind of floatation between the rear wheels that allowed it to float and paddle?

I feel guilty now, because I have bragged about that trike several times over the years. The wheels were full of plastic foam, which made it float. And the paddles were bolted to the inboard side of the rear wheels. It was actually a better boat than land-vehicle. It was built for Kinetic Sculpture Racing. One of these days I hope to find time to rebuild it.

Here is a smaller trike I built more recently. This one has been to Burning Man several times.

I try to give moral support to other trike builders! :D

Strictly pedal-power for me! But, again, the big tires allows it to float.

Hi all!

First – a huge thanks to all of you who have contributed so far, we’re making good progress on the fundraising and completion of the Mancycle! We’re down to two weeks left on the Kickstarter now, and we’ll be ramping up with new pictures this week and another video blog from Tony describing the process involved in designing and building the canopy with flame-jet assembly. Please share this project with your friends and fellow Burners to help us reach our funding goal that will secure an epic lighting display and transportation for the Mancycle to the playa.

Looking forward to seeing all of you soon, just five weeks away now! )’(
