KickStarter party on the playa!

We should plan a party at one of the KickStarter art pieces (Pier, giant clock) with the various KickStarter Mutant Vehicles!

Or would we be inciting a riot??????

The Pier is down too. It would be fun to have a roaming party. Have everyone start their seaside voyage from the pier and have a travelling party armada hit up a bunch of Kickstarter projects. Georgie Boy, The Temple, Re-Onion (please donate to them) Walk about woods, etc,...

After all, that is kinda what The Pier is built for :).

are you suggesting we take a long walk off a short pier? Peter Hudson's Charon is going to be very cool as well.

How about a kickstarter art installation crawl? Get a large group to gather and then every hour head to a new spot. Need to get a good DJ art car along for the ride for some good tunes!

Great idea, the KS Crawl. I think Boogaloo is a DJ based group and Mutant Vehicle. Plus we have Charlie, the Unicorn and Beau, the Pink Elephant. Playa-crawlers unite!

We should have a kick starter fund raiser!!! A roaming party where everyone put in $5 and we go to all the projects. Then we raffle the $1-$2 k we collect off to a project for next year.

I'll be there rockin the Bon Scott!!! I've got the DOwWN PAMent BLEWWZ.

What the hell, I think I'll start a KickStarter project called "fund my camp and pay my way to burning man" project.

Yea, no fundraising on playa. That would kinda suck. No raffles, prizes or whatever. Lets just have fun.

jkisha: most of us arn't rich enough to just throw together rad art. I have spent allot of money out of pocket on my art in past years. I will still spend some this year. But Kickstarter gives us a chance to make something a little bigger and a little better. Shit, we would beg our friends from money anyways, kickstarter is just a bigger cardboard sign.

If you are OK with it then there shouldn't be any reason for you to have to justify it or try to convince others of its correctness.

We charge camp dues, I'm sure some people think that's wrong too; but at least all the people that pay camp dues participate in the camp.

I'm not so sure that holds true for projects like art cars, especially if what I've heard about people trying to get a ride on one is true.

JK I am totally okay with this form of community microfinancing but it still bothers me to see you ragging on them, jeez some of these folks have already coolified my life just by talking out my monitor about their projects. And there are lots of brilliant whisperers out there who don't need any more discouragement, thank you.

Of course the 10% rule applies but that's true everywhere.

I'm not ragging on the concept, I donate to art projects on kichstarter, and at first thought it a wonderful way for artists to raise funding. My own personal problem is what seems now to be the changing definition of an art project, which has usually been done for the benefit of the community and the newly emerging definition which seems to include projects that seem more to benefit the individual building the project.

I do have a problem with a handful of projects I have seen on kickstarter that seem to be projects that are meant to pay the artist. However, since I have been combing through the projects on Kickstarter the past couple days I have found that those projects seem to fail. The projects that succeed tend to be the honest ones. The once that are asking for smaller sums, sums of money that help them get the project done without going bankrupt in the process.

Its a little silly to say that just being OK with something means you don't have to justify it. I have had to justify actions over the span of my life that I am ok with to people of other viewpoints for a long time. Each person if different, you may be fine being an isolated island of opinion and ideas. Me I like to share what I have learned and part of that included taking some time to form a counter to an argument, justifying my views and doing my best to change anothers views. Do I accept the other persons views, yes. Do I think mine are better, sometimes.

I am a little bothered by the art cars that are offering rides as their rewards. The art cars should be for the community, not the individual. And rewards shouldn't be about inclusion when inclusion is expected. That is like me offering a reward of exclusive access to the Kickstarter only section of The Pier

I stand by what I said in the context that I said it. A true "artist" does not have to justify their art to anybody. It's anathema to the artist and to the entire artistic process.

Now for a salesman, or a politician, or someone trying to justify why something is worthy of community funding....justification might be necessary. Trying to convince me? Totally unnecessary, as I really don't care what they do or who decides to donate to it. My opinion on some of the requests is still the same. But that's just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.

that's why i actually started mine. i have lots of friends and family who either can't afford to go to burning man or it's just not for them (and i appreciate their honesty about that), but they appreciate what i'm doing and want to help...and i like the idea of being able to gift them something for their contribution and keep them up to date with my progress. and i think kickstarter is a good platform for that.

Just throwing in our 2cents on the whole Kickstarter thing. Our Mutant Vehicle project was always designed with the thought of benefiting the whole of Black Rock City. We wanted to create a movable art piece that would be whimiscal and enhance peoples experience. The amount of out of pocket expense for our mutant vehicle (and camp) far exceeds the amount of money we raised on Kickstarter. The offering of rides for a pledge was for an art tour / happy hour to honor those people who were kind enough to help us out and we don't see a problem with it. Burning Man is only as good as we all make it and as a group of long time burners we understand what it's all about and really wanted to take our participation to the next level.

Thank you fbcota, I also find your messages well thought out. I hope to me you on the playa. Come up and say hi and take a ride with us.

From 2001-2006 I helped a friend with his Mutant Vehicles until he stopped building them. We built 'party barges'. Beau is more art than party barge. As a long time runner of MV's I never stopped anyone from getting on unless it made the MV unsafe. We actually broke the hitch off our 2005 MV. That was a fracking awesome night!

With Beau we probably will have a capacity of 12-14. We won't have a 'dress' code or a 'you're not a beautiful woman' code. As long as Beau is safe to drive we welcome riders! We are doing this for BRC. We hope this has the visual effect of the White Whale (2002) or the table saw MV. It is a labor of love. It will be a lot of work before hand and a lot of work on the playa but I believe it will add to the wonder that is . . . . . . . .

Oh wait, forget all that because I don't need to justify it.

LOL, Gravybrain speaks for itself. I have no idea what it is all about. For 10 years I have gone all out as a participant. I have become Captain Skirt (aka 'Skirty'), Gleneesh, and Dr. Magic. Radical self expression. All I know is, I get to be whatever I want and I take full advantage of it. To me, BM is an adult Disneyland full of wonder. I will give sage advice unless I don't have any sage on me (which is most of the time). But after 10 years I still don't really know what it is all about. I do know that it is a magical place. A place where you could see any thing. A place that, even when I am not there, makes my brain work!

I have been pretty stoked about kickstarter. It has allowed me to think a bit bigger each year and do some things that are outside of my financial realm.

I can't name a single "real" artist I have ever met or read about that didn't spend time justifying their work. I guess their could be a couple bums on the street doing art full time that never justified their work, or some trust fund kids that never had to. But for most of us, our work is our passion. We talk about it, we defend it, we create it and we live by it. And at the same time, I am sure there are just as many varieties of "real" artists as there are any other group of people. I think the only thing that makes someone a real artist is participating in the act of making "art".

This is my opinion too, but its one I will defend. I'm not one to quietly walk away from making a point I believe in, and well I really suck at "agreeing to disagree".

I really love the art cars on Kickstarter right now. Most of the ones that seem to be succeeding are clearly cool pieces of moving art meant for everyone. I have always thought Beaulephant was pretty rad.

I have found a handful of projects that are clearly looking to "pay" the artist. Those bother me, but they are also not succeeding.

Back to the crawl. Yes, we need to do this crawl. Should it be in the event guide? Could be a cool way to show people who want to build art on the playa a couple different ways to find funding for their art.

I think earlier in the week is better. By Thursday every one is running around with their panties in a bunch, or in no panties and a shirt......

So maybe Tuesday or Wednesday we'll dock at the Pier? Then we can go out and crawl to the next KS art work......

We had better get these plans ready soon! It's almost upon us!!!

Forgive me for the blatent plug, but you could donate to Moose Man, Toronto's contribution to the Circle of Regional Effigies. Moose Man is coming a long way for his Virgin Burn, and we need funding to help with the high costs of transportation....

You can donate at our Kickstarter page - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/99597290/mooseman-burnts-core-art-effigy

Tuesday or Wednesday work fine. Wednesday night we are having our poncy dinner at the end of the pier, so it could be a bit chaotic at night. But I don't mind, The Pier is for the public.

Do you think all the KS projects will be installed by then? A good number of us are honorarium, but not all.

Super: You guys need a video. Also, change the title (if you can) to more clearly state that its a Burning Man project. Sorry for the unsolicited advice, I have just noticed that you guys are not getting the attention you deserve yet and I think that it may be due to those 2 things.

Ohh, I don't think it hurts to have more details in your description then less.

BTW: It looks really cool :). I actually wasn't sure what the project was for until you just posted here.
