Small Art, 2011

Postby theCryptofishist » Thu Mar 10, 2011 5:23 pm

Okay, we've been watching the really big projects grow (and fundraise) and apply for grants. And it's fun, it's great, we will be looking for those projects that define a particular year's experience. And then there's the MVs--lovely complicated monsters.
But there's small art as well. Something camp sized, perhaps. Not a costume or a gift, maybe they wont be burned. Maybe the artist has done something before, maybe this is his or her first foray.
Are you bringing a smaller art piece to the playa? Want to brag? Get help? Boost your post count?
Then tell us about it.

I'm hoping to to bring Metamorph-Us Butterfly Garden to the Playa:

It will be a butterfly garden created from crocheted/knitted colored copper wire, colored annodized aluminum wire, beautiful yarns and a participant-sized chrysalis using a sturdy hanging chair design.

You can check out my progress on my blog:

2011 will be my 4th time to the BRC, first time bringing art.

Wishing everyone good luck on bringing their pieces to Playa =)

I like that there's been more responses to the poll than posts in the thread.

I'm working on my first art installation... ok, my first on-purpose art installation, having accidentally made a pvc greatcircle dome on my first burn that was too unstable to put shadecloth on, and folks tied pinwheels to it instead. :-) Good thing I'd brought my regular tent as a backup shelter.

The art is called Forest of the Heart, and there's info on it here:
http://www.art.net/studios/hackers/strata/foth/

It's a series of groves of large (4x8 ft) trees laid out like the chambers of a human heart, with a pen-and-paper based Oracle in each chamber. I'd love to find other artists who'd like to decorate a tree, and even more so to find a sound artist who'd like to create a surreal, lush, mythical soundscape for it!

For my second trip to the Playa, I created my first project, and it's... alternative.

A man I loved died last fall, and since we were primarily writers together, I chose to celebrate him as a writer. I miss him so much, I needed really big magic to propel me forward, so I created a Rite of Passage within a Rite of Passage for myself that leads from the West Coast to Charlottesville, Virginia, and ends in Black Rock City.

The piece is many things: a memorial, an homage to my English degree, a tribute to some of my favorite writers, an ode to Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village, a spiritual path, a game.

I contacted UVa students last week... crossing my fingers.

The knitted wire and the tree projects both look very cool. I wish I could decorate a tree, but I'm a little far from Sunnyvale.

I guess the question is: what is small art? My project is available to anyone with a web browser, but the outcome is a framed 11" x 17" piece of paper and a sense of personal accomplishment for one. A pack of 4' x 8' trees is ginormous by comparison. =)

My work is based on cigar boxes.

I'd say that "small art" is up to about four feet high. Something one person can carry. Even though I invented the catagory (on eplaya, at least) I might be wrong.

I find that my project is still embrionic enough that I don't want to discuss it, lest I diffuse some of the "juju."

heh, I know how that is. although in my case, I end up switching back and revising so many times in the embryonic stage, I can exhaust people if I try sharing before the appropriate moment.
