Barbarian Camp

Postby Ugly Dougly » Thu Jan 22, 2009 2:22 pm

Barbierians?

"Barbarian" is mostly a mythical word. The "barbarians" that the Romans referred to included Goths, Celts, oh yeah those of the Persian Empire, an older civilization that Rome.

But today, this word conjures a different connotation: the Dionysian as opposed to the Apollonian (and we'll have room for both in our camp)!

I like to consider myself a Dionysian/Bacchant barbarian
I didn't really think there were many other kinds.
An Apollonian barbarian would be sort of ironic, as Apollo is indicitive of order and thus civilization

Yes, that's what the "as opposed to" signifies. :)

We will also be developing a civilized Roman camp as well, to portray the Apollonian alternative...

two camps .... how will they differ?

will each have their own religion, for instance?

will one camp have better weapons or tactics?

will the camps mingle in peaceful ways?

will it be possible to be a barbarian one day, and civilized the next?

how civilized - or uncivilized - is burningman, in general?

am i asking stupid questions?

That is up to the actual camp members and no one else. ;)

will each have their own religion, for instance?

Sure, why not, at least temporarily.
will one camp have better weapons or tactics?

What would the sport be in that?
will the camps mingle in peaceful ways?

I think that we are pretending to be in violent conflict, aren't we? Does this sound like a place for Serious People? :)
will it be possible to be a barbarian one day, and civilized the next?

You know, art imitates life, doesn't it?
how civilized - or uncivilized - is burningman, in general?

You're a newby aren't you. I can tell.
am i asking stupid questions?

Only if that was your last question. ;)

a few more questions:

are you leaning towards something historical? or a free-wheeling anything goes kind of barbarianism?

will forks be allowed?

will there be a penalty for romans who look more like ancient greeks? or barbarians who look like conan, our governator?

speaking of punishment .... will you have a rack? will all prisoners be killed, or incarcerated? will the geneva convention apply?

Is this Burningman or Pennsic??? (Anyone from the SCA?)

Seriously, I side with whoever shows up. Bottom line. BS walks. :)

will forks be allowed?:

If you get into being jabbed in the butt.
We never had forks at Burningman previously, why start now? ;)

will there be a penalty for romans who look more like ancient greeks? or barbarians who look like conan, our governator?:

Penalty? Sure, if you like.

You're supposed to provide the rack, dear. ;)

As an observer of this thread I am amused that littleflower is way more interesting than any of the supposed barbarians here. Me thinks that the barbarians are hoping an actual girl might join the camp. :)

Littleflower, this video might be educational before you join the barbarians:

All done, thanks. Please reach your own conclusions.

However, you gotta admit that that is one of the funnier Triumph The Insult Dog scenes - even if you don't recognize your self...
