Amsterdam project looking to print stuff in the States

Postby dadara » Thu Nov 08, 2007 4:42 pm

In 2002 and 2003 I built two art projects on the Playa. One was the Fools Ark, a threemaster I shipped from Amsterdam to burn on the Playa and the other was the Burning Greyman, an altar where 120 burners could burn their inner Greyman in their own ritual. (the paper maché Greymen came from Thailand by the way)

So far the introduction. So yes, I'm a foreigner living in Europe but I did get inspired by the American Dream theme and have an idea for a project. I'm currently in the process of writing, sketching and researching.

What I'm looking for right now is a ( Burner friendly) printing house/ graphic studio that could help out with printing some stuff I'd need for the project.

I want to have everything printed in the States (preferably California) instead of shipping it all from here which will cost way too much. (I did already ship my Fools Ark from Amsterdam and still recovering from that.....)

Any help appreciated :D

Glad to hear there's at least already one person who's happy I'll return to the Playa with a project

I'm happy as well, since almost directly after posting this topic I got a private message of a printer offering his services at cost price and playa-delivery :D

I'll definitely let you know more details soon when I have my whole project together. And there's definitely more stuff I can use help with!
I only don't know how to change the "looking to print stuff in the States" topic headline, so guess I'll post another one soon.

Considering the theme this year, it would be nice if this project can become reality through a combined European-American effort!

Changing the topic headline might be something Dork has to do if it is possible. AntiM and the other mods may not be able to do it. You can always send a PM to Dork and ask him nicely. If its possible I'm sure he'd do it.

Footage from the construction of the Fools Ark and the Burning Greymen is used in a part-animated movie telling the tale behind the projects.
"Fall and Rise of the Fools Ark" http://www.foolsark.com

I am working hard on putting my grant proposal together at the moment for my dream project.
Writing, sketching, thinking. Got people in the States helping me out with researching budget etc. Maybe even got wooden beams from a wood mill for a fraction of the costs. :D

Once I got it all written out and a fixed plan I'll post it. I won't build it all here and ship it (gaminwench was right that shipping of the Fools Ark was a nightmare, especially if customs are not cooperating :( ), but it will still be a difficult task setting it all up from Europe. So any help will be appreciated!

PS if anybody has a spare truck left to truck loads of wood to the desert................

PPS not a Playa project, but beginning of this year I build a big pink tank with four barrels on a rooftop in the centre of Amsterdam and blew it up with explosives (not on the roof.......) Might be of Burner-interest

Can't wait 'till you can share your proposal. Fingers crossed that a BMorg grant comes through!

Does anyone on this forum know if there's internet available on the Playa and what the possibilities for web communication are?
I am working with some people on ideas of adding a nice feature to my art installation, combining mobile and net-technology and GPS, which could definitely enhance the whole project in many ways, also philosophically.......
But we were not sure if and how internet would work on the whole Playa.
Any info appreciated :D

Some people provide Wi-Fi but it's very sporadic and sparse coverage. I wouldn't rely on Wi-Fi being readily available to you.

for our purposes it would be enough to be able to connect to the internet once or twice a day, preferably also in the week before Burning Man starts when we'll be building everything.......

You "should" be able to get connected once or twice a day with no problem. You might have to migrate over to Center Camp to get that signal though. I definitely wouldn't count on there being any internet before the event starts since that is provided by people in the community and not BMORG.

Does anybody know anything about that inflatable satellite internet receiver that is pictured on a lot of the hexayurt sites? That might be an option and then YOU could provide internet service to the community.

Has anyone heard what the limitations on camp builders going early are going to be. From what I remember it's always been difficult before the Wednesday, you don't get many and you need prior permission. And they are supposed to be tightening up.

hey All

I'm reviving this old post of mine, trying to find a Burner friendly printer who might help me with my Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia project.
A Border Control Checkpoint to enter your Own Dreams.
http://www.dreamyourtopia.com

I had an offer a while ago from a printer to print all for cost price, but recently lost email contact. Maybe the proverbial virtual dust storm blew it away, who knows.......

Since this whole project is a huge undertaking, I'd prefer to find a back-up plan as soon as possible, so I can keep concentrating on the creative side of things.......

There are two things I want to print in the States: a Passport to enter the Land of Dreams and Dream Currency bills ( see pics )

Any help and/or info appreciated.
you can pm me or send me a comment throught the dreamyourtopia site
