Wayne,
The gift you give is truly AWESOME and knowing of your actions gave me the confidence to take on giving the gift of mobility when a camp mate needed it.
Although the need for assistance may be virtually unlimited at the burn ones ability to provide for everyone is not unlimited. It is ok to have a limit to what you can do at the burn.
Maybe some of the burning man community can help Hot Wheelz Camp by bringing to burning man things that will lighten the load for you?
What kinds of gifts would help the many wheelz at hot wheels keep on turning? _________________ Black Rock City Welding and Repair. TIG and Stick arc welding for repair of your broken things on Playa. Repair, adjustments, trouble-shooting and general tinkering. Provider of D.V. Golficus Carticus.

We all know that Dale leaves big shoes to fill. I've been with him and Hot Wheelz for 3 years, and without his hands-on involvement this year, I need the community's assistance and cooperation. I've built and customized over 10 vehicles for this program alone. We've registered over 40 mutant and/or mobility vehicles. Two years ago I was given the Public Services Honorarium Grant by Burning Man in appreciation of our services and to assist us in our gifts to those in need.
Hot Wheelz is but only the tip of the iceberg of what I'm doing in this regard. Through my working on Hot Wheelz projects I've been networking and volunteering with the following agencies and individuals in the Greater Bay Area:
I've been volunteering with Program Director Susan Murphy and Steve Allen with the ReCARES Network where we receive, repair, and redistribute home care medical equipment. Many professional caregivers come to us for equipment to fill in the gaps not covered by insurance and other programs. The ReCARES Network is currently underfunded by about 30% this year.
We are also working with a local public cable access station in producing and airing commercial segments designed to benefit and inform the public of the needs and services provided by both ReCares and Hot Wheelz.
I'm also assisting with Stan Clawson, a videographer who has produced documentaries focusing on those with physical limitations. He now wants to produce a new documentary concerning life on the playa for those with these limitations and mobility issues. I'm coordinating airtime for Stan's documentary on the local public cable access station. Stan's blog link: www.spinal-cracker.blogspot.com
Stan is a paraplegic himself and will be participating with Hot Wheelz this year.
I've also been networking with Tom McCarthy, Lead Recreation Therapist at the Spinal Cord Injury Center at the Palo Alto VA. We ask your help by contacting his office and offering to "adopt-a-vet" into your camp at Burning Man. Hot Wheelz will assist with on-playa mobility for those who participate in this adopt-a-vet program.
Tom's e-mail: Thomas.McCarthy@med.va.gov
I've also been assisting John Corben, Hawaiian Regional Burning Man representative, throughout his ongoing treatments for cancer. John and his family shall be camping with us at Hot Wheelz so come by and say hi and maybe take him on a tour of Black Rock City.
John's e-mail: flaghfine@aol.com
We're also coordinating with Nowhere Omnibus who have offered to help us with transporting those with mobility issues. We're currently working with the BORG to place Hot Wheelz Camp at their Center Camp Bus Stop.
*whew*!
Hot Wheelz Camp needs your assistance with the following:
-Transportation of 10 small mutated mobility vehicles from Oakland to Black Rock City, and back. Equipment must be loaded and ready for transport by Thursday, August 27th, and delivered to our camp at Black Rock on or before Monday, August 31st. Then returned to Oakland once the event is over. I, Wayne, shall be leaving BRC on Tuesday morning, Sept.8th, after all MOOP has been removed from our site and surrounding areas.
-Funds for Batteries. Estimate $1200 total cost for these batteries.
-Use of and assistance with an approx. 18' Dome structure to be used as our Therapy Center. We will also need volunteers to staff this center.
-Assistance w/ general Hot Wheelz Camp functions.
-Assistance w/ preparation, loading, unloading and easy set-up of Hot Wheelz Camp.
-We'll need people to swing by Big Dale's home in Reno and transport his Big-Ass Shade Structure, banners, and 2 small mobility vehicles.
Thanks for your interest and help in our service toward those who really need it.
Sincerely, Wayne Merchant, your Hot Wheelz Camp coordinator and host of Mobility Services at Black Rock City.

POWERCHAIR,
Unfortunately due to the SIZE of the shade structure your speaking of over at Mr. Fixits your borrowing,
We wont be able to help you.
We also run a LARGE theme camp. And our trailer is wayyyyyyyy full, and the wieght/length Mr. fixit explained will not fit into our other equipment.
Im so sorry.
Good luck on your new search for a larger vehicle for said shade structure.
I know that Miss Risky there, has only a small Toyota/and tiny camper.
Sending blessing of hard work and much success to you and yours. _________________ The BOOBY BAR snuggled down inside

Hey Wayne,
I will be coming from North Carolina pulling a 29 ft fifth wheel. If you can come up with a trailer to haul the stuff in Reno, I can pull it with my truck, if we can find a place to temporarily drop my camper. I'm also handy with tools if needed. Jhnt |

Good news, Looks like everything is self coordinating. We have many requests of assistance we will be responding very soon, after the weekend. We just need to catch up on a little hands on work. Stay posted, we will be having a workshop, fundraiser in the next couple of weeks which will include decorating of many surprises, wheelchairs, manual chairs, leg braces and general maintained of our fleet of 12 vehicles plus that we plan on offering to the community. We are also going to post in this thread every tip for those with mobility issues and what the dos and don'ts of electric mobility wheelchairs, which ones work, which ones don't and those that need to be protected and those ok to just thrash on. It will be tied to other links so as to keep whoever comes out to Black Rock City as well informed as possible. Before they hit the dust or the dust hits them. I love the feedback from others who have been assisting others in their area in need of assistance in their sports programs ect. I would love to see some Rugby wheelchair competition on the Playa. Still have not nailed down full transportation, does anybody have a large Toyhauler trailer - 20 feet or a large track? Anyone know someone who could help with printing a large banner and shwagg stickers with our new logo?
Many Many thanks to all who have come to our aid so that we may aid others.

I sent you a PM.
I cannot haul anything, but I will contact you to help out for a bit during the burn.
I fix W/C's and have decent electronic basic tools.
If all goes well, I will also have my own PMD that has a 12 HP engine, capable of towing several people in manual chairs...and or/driving them around in one of the vehicles you spoke of. _________________ No matter where you go...there you are. |

Hey Wayne,
Thanks again for all of the work you're putting into this camp. I can't wait to be a part of BRC Mobility and the Burning Man experience.
I'm excited about capturing BM access and producing some interesting video that sheds light on disabled culture at the burn.
We will arrive at dawn on Sept. 1st. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do. I will be bringing my handcycle as well.
See you soon and safe travels.

Well we made the Black Rock City Department of Mobility happen 13ten days in the city of dust.
We gave a pallet of Gatorade away this year,
Thank you Gatorade/QTG for the donation's you ROCK BIG TIME!
Gatorade/QTG has been making donation's to us for the last fore year's.
We had more request this year then in past years for mobility and other help!
It was so much work, more like a death march I'm steal recovering .
We had to leave 4 of the 15 mobility/art cars behind in Oakland bummer.
If not for the hand full of rock stars.
This wood have been the last year of mobility gifting at BRC.
To my surprise the disabled in my camp were some of the biggest rock stars!
Every one loves what we do for those in need of mobility.
But i need more ROCK STAR HELP! to keep it going.
We have big plans for next year.
We or teeming up with the BRC Post Office,
Those we gift with mobility will be gifting back by delivering the mail at BRC,
The rest is top secret at this time??
And a BIG THANK YOU to all who helped make the camp happen this year. _________________ POWERCHAIR gifting designing and building. BRC DEPARTMENT OF MOBILITY

Just wanted to say thanks...
Great to be a small part of the Dept. Of Mobility...
BIG PROPS to Wayne and all his had work (on and off the playa)!
He deserves many Kudos...(and a bunch of volunteers)
It was a real treat to see the look in the eyes of the folks who we were able to reach out to and lend a hand (or foot) - good stuff....
Being of service is a gift to both giver and receiver...
