I'm not in a NL camp, but I am a Newfoundlander. I currently am in Calgary and will be making the trek this year, however, bringing the "screech in" essentials across the border is tough considering it would include meat (not allowed)... unless you know somewhere in the US one can purchase a Maple Leaf baby bologna? I'm also out of certificates...

Meat is part of the screech-in? I thought it involved kissing a cod! :)

No - there is no cod kissing anymore. Since the fisheries are all closed now (there is no cod), you must kiss a Puffin's a$$. We usually bring a toy plushy puffin. (FYI - a puffin is a bird)

You also need to eat a piece of bologna, wear a sou'wester (hat), do a few jig steps, and say a newfie saying in newfinese in addition to having a shot of screech. You must continue doing a shot of screech with each attempt at the newfie saying until the true Newfoundlander present states you've said it correctly.

Disclaimer - every Newfoundlander has their own version of the screech in. This is my family's, so I stick by their rules.

P.S. I don't know that you can even buy Newfie Screech in the US?

Veryyyy innnnteresting. :) I'd only ever heard about the cod, etc.

I think you can mail order Screech on the internet. I don't know though. Thanks for responding though! Guess I'll have to wait for a proper screech-in until my trip to St. John's. :)

I say do it up right. If you REALLY want an experience, try to make it from one end of George Street to the other in St. John's by pub-hopping ;) There's nothing like a mainlander getting screeched in on the rock!
