You might want to try Hengehold for the Bay Area. They have been burner friendly in the past, to the point where they have a web page addressed directly to burningman renters.

So, I am thinking about renting a box truck at Budget Sacramento, pick it up there and drive it to the playa. However, slight problem: I am German :) Trucks still seem to be available in Sac., however the registration online requires US Address / Phone Number etc. which i obviously don't have. Is it still possible somehow to rent a truck as a foreigner? Call them maybe? Any advice? Thanks in advance.

If the company you're interested in renting from won't allow you to book online, then yes, you should consider calling them and seeing if there's a way you can book a reservation by phone.

'smacks, I've a sinking feeling the answer is "yes," but did you get a feel if this year's changes with Budget rentals also extend to cargo vans? I was planning on down-sizing anyhow...

I checked the site and the (non-coupon) per diem cost of renting a cargo van looks to be more than I paid last year for a 16' truck! This price doesn't seem to go down if I change the dates (in the $43/day range) but if I change location to, say, SoCal, during TTITD it goes down to $30/day. Clever couponing will probably get me a rate I'll accept but I'm not keen on losing my cargo truck reservation at the last moment.
It makes sense if you don't think about it.
