Indeed. It's not the file, it's a torrent descriptor file. You use BitTorrent client software to actually download the file. It downloads from many other computers on the Internet, so if one connection is slow or gets disconnected, the download can continue (as opposed to a FTP or HTTP download which must download the file in order from start-to-end, is limited by the speed and reliability of that one connection, and has limited provisions for recovering from a broken connection, so it's not particularly good for large files). You can read more about it at the Wikipedia article and find examples of client software from this article, although I use µTorrent (aka uTorrent) on a Mac and that works satisfactorily for me.
