I actually had an "all wheel drive" bicycle at Burning Man in '01. It was a regular mountain bike with a little gas motor that drove the front wheel via a roller that simply pressed against the top of the front tire. When you also pedaled it you effectively had all-wheel-drive. It really did help a lot when riding through soft silty sections of playa!

I'm curious how something like this would handle on the playa. The rear tire, that is...with the double chains.


AND, if a tweaked out sealed drive shaft would hurt or help...

The two-stage drivetrain would be fine. The rear tire would feel a bit odd, but no real problem.
But the seating position and the steering geometry would murder you. Without a back-rest, you would be hanging on for dear life to keep from tumbling backward. And that steering geometry would want to go anywhere but straight. Bin dere, dun dat.

By the way, the tricycle I showed earlier was originally a bicycle. Here Miss Gina is getting ready for Critical Tits in 2007:

The only steering problem I had was turning corners inside BRC. Really large turn radius!! On the playa, it went straight, and very fucking fast! Not sure what we did, but the gearing was JUST RIGHT! I kinda liked hanging off the handlebars. Though it's NOT something I could ride hands free, it was extremely comfortable!

My ReBike and ReTrike have extended forks.. I had to learn how to ride differently. Yes keep you hands on the the steering..

Sheldon Brown was a life-long Major Bicycling Enthusiast and Bicycle Technician who assembled an encyclopedic cornucopia of bicycle knowledge on a web site sponsored by his employer Harris Cyclery. After his passing a few years ago the web site is being maintained and even expanded by his colleagues.
It will take you a while to plow thru all his Wondermuss Stuff to find what you think you are looking for, but when it comes to traditional bicycle technology it is a-l-l there.

Sheldon Brown is so widely revered in bicycle circles that I cannot imagine his site ever being abandoned.
I just bought a bicycle part from a random online bicycle store, after asking the seller a technical question. His reply began "According to Sheldon Brown...."
