School Bus 101, long technical post

Yup the darn thing started right up. Took 2 fresh batteries, wouldn't even budge the starter trying to jump it off the truck. Engine is a fresh rebuild mated to a newer transmission than came with the bus and runs solid. Didn't miss a beat all the way home, drives nice. Not bad for something abandoned in a storage lot for 4 years. The inside will need a lot of work. Someone took out the bus wiring harness and tried to graft in the controls from a big motorcoach...its badly done. Nothing on the dash works. On the plus side it was at one time completely converted into an RV complete with holding and water tanks, propane, inverter, kohler genny, air compressor, assorted house batteries and controls...all of which got cut at floor level and the inside gutted. New plywood was put on the floor and the lower sidewalls and that's where the project ended. I need to put on roof vents, a couple windows and a deck

This bus probably won't see the playa this year, will shoot for 2014 and be in the Starship bus for 2013.

Ha! oh no, no roof cutting on this one! Your bus will always be taller...but there is this 26 x 26 hole already up there that will be awesome as access to a big deck up top.
However...might make a big side access door with a ramp or lift...that would be most excellent. Good to load camp and KSR stuffs. It has the 8V71 engine with V730 Allison trans...an power steering even which the other bus here lacks. May spoil me.

Yeah those are always Detroits, but they're ok.
I've been dead-set against it, but lately I've begun considering a conventional, motor-out-front bus, just because you can get really nice ones SO cheap, and service is so much easier.
It's just such a challenge to make it not look like a school bus.
Fitting a 359 or 379 Peterbilt nose would make it cool but that would probably make up the difference in cost of getting a flat-front bus.
I need more money... that's the real issue...
I could justify a bus if it had a name as cool as "Starship Palomino". But that's a pipe dream.

I rode a Greyhound (MCI) six years ago when I went to pick up my new (to me) Blue Bird in Oregon. It had a 50 Series Detroit, which is a modern four-stroke designed largely by Mercedes -- an excellent engine.

Work is coming along, the roof vents are on and side windows are all back in. Now I have an engine bulkhead to reinforce because the original converters kinda underbuilt it when they put in the bigger engine/radiator setup.

The bus has been named the Silver Gryphon, in large part because it seems to be the combination of at least 3 different busses heheh

Mayyybe it will be the playa rig for this year, we'll see.

At the rear (left) is my red model T pedal car in the water at a Kinetic race. Next is Peter's "Choo Choo", also in a Kinetic race, and at the front (right) is Miss Gina on my "chopper" bicycle riding in Critical Tits 2007. I need to give the roof a coat of white, and then it will finally looks sort'a complete.
