Cargo Cult - Who is John Frum? He is known to us by many names, this Visitor from Elsewhere, dispenser of endless abundance and wielder of mysterious technologies: John Frum, Quetzalcoatl, Osiris, "Bob." His cargo is splendid, his generosity boundless, his motives beyond our understanding. But across the ages and around the world, the stories all agree: one day he will return, bearing great gifts. Our theme this year asks three related questions; who is John Frum, where is he really from, and where, on spaceship Earth, are we all going?

My two cents at this point:
There was mention of the movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, either in this thread or another. I had not seen it since it first came out, but I watched it last night and by golly, there is a very good example of a Cargo Cult in this film. You have to sit thru all the other silliness, but it is worth it if you would like to see a cargo cult in action.

Rousseau wrote::The problem is to find a form of association which will defend and protect with the whole common force the person and goods of each associate, and in which each, while uniting himself with all, may still obey himself alone, and remain as free as before." This is the fundamental problem of which the Social Contract provides the solution.

When thinking Cargo Cults
The question arises . . What items should we take to a desert island for future generations of islanders to construct a cult around, long after our deaths?

Just think of all of the faithful viewers waiting for the next episode -
"see you real soon" - Micky Mouse
"ya'all come back now - ya hear" - Beverly Hillbillies
"Tune in next week for...."
As the world turns
Days of our lives
"Same Bat channel, Same Bat time"
Nightly News
Superbowl XXXXX
The list is endless
I'm sure the cult following many shows would fit into the theme - the cargo being pure crap (re: entertainment)

Interesting that one of the commenters on the yahoo blog thought Amish might use a slide rule as entertainment but not math/tool. Odd that...
The slide rule was an important tool in the 50s, took our astronauts to space, and our bombs to Nagasaki.
Dont you wonder what Archimedes used?

Old slide rule joke:
An engineer is teaching his son how to use a slide rule, and he starts with a simple 3x4 and gets 13. The son laughs and says "Oh Dad, you know that's wrong!"
The engineer puts his eye-glasses on and does the calculation again. "By golly, you are right, Son; 3x4 is actually... (squints carefully at slide rule) ...12.1032."
Yes I know....
