Hi all. I am a single male (I have a great gf), native to Denver (lived all over the world and many,many states) and have never been to BM. I just recently did the Roo so I know how some festys are a bit harder than others, but I need to go to BM while I can. I am retired from the gov't after 30 years at the same job. I have two daughters and 8 grand kids. Lest you think, better stay home old dude, just a couple of years ago I went to over 200 concerts in one year. Did the 60's bay area trip, just found a stub for the Atlanta Pop festival , hit WS 69 and 99, all of the Lolla's b4 Chicago, yada yada. But for a personal event history, not going to BM is like going to church and not listening to the sermon (like I go lolz). I am 64 thus the "When I'm 64" thing. First show of the leg, Bridge Benefit Concert in Oct (SF), NYE with STS9 (Denver), hope to hit Coachella, Roo, Wakarusa, who knows, and BM before Oct 21 2013. Should be fun. I digress, hope to meet new people, grow even at this age and enjoy the lucky life I have lived. cr**** (Colorado Ron)

What happens on October, 21 2013 that you need to get to all the festivals before that?

Then I turn 65 so I thought I would do my own personal year long trek across the US. I went to both days at the Bridge show but the 2nd day was my BD so I would like to end it at the Bridge. I go to mostly music festivals, but other things like BM I hope. cr****

Burning Man isn't a 'Festival', and not like anything you've been to. Totally unique and so not a festival. Read the guides.

Yep I'm learning all the time. A young gal I used to work with has gone the last few years so I am trying to get advice from her cuz she knows who I am (as if any of us really know who we are). I am thinking since I can't walk for miles about bringing a bike. Thoughts.... I have often compared Coachella to Disneyland as opposed to Bonnaroo for 5 days being the Bataan Death March. I think I might have to revise that eh......cr****

A bike will be really helpful for you--it will really help you see a lot more of the city, which is at least 5 square miles. Practice riding several times a week in the Spring, and maybe get a padded gel seat. If you're not in shape to bicycle by the Burn, getting around will definitely kick your ass a bit.

Beach cruisers do better than 10-speeds.

You need a bike. And, yeah, a beach cruiser. I got two, a matching pair for $40 each. Got 4 years out of them. 2 1/8" tires work great.

I've got a trike now, getting another and putting an electric motor on both of them - 'cause I'm old.

At least get a mountain bike. You don't need the gears - there's a 5 mph speed limit, enforced by me - Slow your damn roll! They work but beach cruisers have better seats. Do not sticky lube the chain. Or anything. Use dry lube.

Yea it's odd I guess. I don't cuss in real life unless I am really really mad. On the Coachella board though I seem to say fuck a lot haha........ So I am in a quandary .. I can spend about $300 for a permanent hitch on my car (esp for BM) to haul a couple of bikes (trikes maybe) but for every fest or event I would have to rent a uhaul thingy for about $15 a day. I could stuff extra things on the trailer though but from the few last fests, my car can hold everything I need to camp for weeks (cept the water I have to work on that..... 25 gal or so I guess for two peeps) ........ My other choice is to drive this big ass PU (a 250 I think) .... newish, 4 wheel drive, killer truck but for just BM it would cost about $100 more in gas from Denver but I wouldn't have to deal with the fucking hitch and trailer stuff.... Thoughts in general ? cr****

I am 55 and have had a hip replacement last year. I am bringing my friend who is 70 and this will be her first time. Go for it! There are a lot of us geezers on the playa. We know how to have fun! Be glad you still have life in you. I am trying to get in better shape now by exercising on a treadmill so I have more strength at the burn. You will be just fine!

If you can take the truck for free/no rental, then do that!
Plus then you can stuff plenty of extra gear in the truck and have a slightly larger shade structure, or a small couch, or a real mattress rather than a blow up, or a full sized grill, or........
Also, the truck filled to the brim will be a much nicer drive from here to Fernley, than a car and a trailer filled to the brim.

Welcome to eplaya canexplain! One of the beautiful things about Burning Man is the wide range in age of the burners there. It just doesn't seem to matter out there as much, and many a geezer abound, often having brought very cool art. Heck, I'm somewhat of a geezer myself at this point!

Another good aspect of a pickup truck is that when you reload your dusty gear after the burn, if you can put it all in the back, and have kept the doors shut all week, and have a clean set of clothes at the ready for the drive back, then the clean up when you get home is that much easier. There is still cleaning to be done, but it is a nice advantage.
