This is a very interesting thread. Despite the unfortunate flamers, look at the results:
Posters have compared the cargo cult to : Calvinism, Charismatic Christianity, American politics, and personal ambiguities.
Any theme that causes that much concern in even a few people has advanced the joint consciousness of the world.

But I am wondering, how do you resolve the inherent conflict between extreme self reliance, and cargo cults of any society?
In the former - you get what you build. In the latter, you get a gift from XXX, based on the singular effort of faith.

Somehow, I can't see the two reconciled. Its a bit of oil and water.
So maybe the idea is - make salad?

today i decided i wanted chopped liver and crackers to eat. i *could* have gone to publix and purchased a tub of chopped liver and a box of ritz crackers.

but i decided to be radically self reliant. so i made my own chopped liver and crackers from scratch.






of course that meant i had to go to publix to buy liver onions eggs mayo flour salt oil and sugar....
but still.

"Extreme" self-reliance means I shit everything I need out of my own butt. I don't even need sunlight or air or water. These things I can create out of my own imagination alone. I don't even need gravity, I can float free in space and be happy.

Is that extreme enough? That's the answer to the question.

What I think you are asking is how extreme do people generally get on the playa?, or how extreme can you get away with? or how extreme is absolutely necessary? or how can I demonstrate self-reliance in an extreme way?

Many of us buy our shelter from The Home Depot or similar place, or dumpster dive, in which case we are relying on something outside of ourselves. Even if you built a Paiute Wickiyup, you'd be dependent on the plants you harvested from the Earth.

To bring it back to the Theme, which is what you may be really asking, can we ever be truly free of John Frum's Cargo?
