2013 Theme - Cargo Cult - thoughts?

my thoughts on the theme?

mass agriculture and readily available transportation of goods has made it too easy for people to survive without any basic survival skills. it's a system that will eventually break. woe to the consumers.

john fromme (or fruhm or whatever the hell) essentially drew the line in the sand that divides the pure survivors from the pure consumers


that's the concept i'll be building on. don't know how yet.

Why would you think Ketel One would be spelled differently? While you got the spelling right, you got their main ingredient wrong - Ketel One is distilled from wheat.

Why would you think Ketel One would be spelled differently? While you got the spelling right, you got their main ingredient wrong - Ketel One is distilled from wheat.

One could easily assume that Ketel One would be spelled with the traditional spelling of kettle using two t's. It's not that far of a reach, now is it?

..and I do stand corrected on the ingredients. Funny.. someone bragged once about how they drink Ketel One specifically because it was potato vodka.. and thus it stuck in my brain as such. Again.. that's what you get for listening to other people instead of verifying the source.

Grey Goose is the nicest ive ever tasted, but I have had IDOL before, made from champagne grapes, was very easy to drink.

Try what I posted.. Tito's. Smoother than almost anything I've ever drank except possibly Belvedere. It makes Grey Goose look like moonshine.

Made in good ol' Texas to boot! ..and you know Texan's like their vodka like they like their sausage..

junglesmacks - I guess I'm enough of a boozehound that I know Ketel's spelling offhand, and that it's Skyy with two y's, etc. Most of my favorites tend to be wheat-based, though I'd like to give Tito's a try sometime (though coming from Texas is definitely not a selling point in my book). I'd also like to give Ciroc a go (french grape-based vodka).

edbrez - I think Ketel One's a fine vodka. Far from the smoothest, but much better than the average stuff. In the case of vodka, the more refined and filtered it is, I've found the less likely it is to lead to a hangover if you drink to excess. Everyone's systems/tolerances are different, personally I've found Skyy and Stolichnaya to be my minimum threshold to be nearly hangover-free. Ketel One is noticeably better than either of those, though a bit more premium priced. I agree with junglesmacks that Belvedere is the higher-end go-to. It's a Rye-based vodka, super super smooth, and blows the doors off Grey Goose.

Relax, trilo. I believe it's made in Austin. While technically in the state of Texas, it's actually not really Texas. Sort of like how Hillsborough isn't really part of the San Francisco Bay Area. In fact, when they were talking about succeeding from the Union last month, I believe the plan was to dig out Austin and dump it in Oklahoma, so they wouldn't have to endure the gawddammed hippies.

I just wish I understood what it is about wheat-sourced vodka that makes it "vodka" as opposed to say, whiskey. No malt?
And grapes? Why isn't that brandy?
Could I use sweet potatoes? Sorghum? Sugar beet? Pumpkin? Parsnips? Or, to bring it back to Cargo Cults, sago?

Fishy - whiskey (and whisky and bourbon, etc) is all about the aging, isn't it? There are multitudes of variants in both the ingredients and the process, too, I think. Both vodka and whiskey are cut from the same 'water of life' cloth and have the same roots (in Mesopotamia).

unjon's right. Potatoes' roots are in Peru. Literally. Of course, the pre-Columbian inhabitants of Peru didn't distill them, but I'm not completely sure that there was no intentional fermentation in the Americas.

So, I'm just a little confused about the Mesopotamia + vodka comment.
