The current system of time and date is just a trend, if you think about it. And a flawed one, at that - we have to keep inserting days at the leap year, and even that's not a precise bugfix. Eventually we'll either come up with a more accurate system or gain some perspective and people will look back on the Gregorian calendar as fondly as we look back on the Julian calendar today.

That said, any excuse for a celebration will do, shots all round!

What Trilo said!

*bellows from his back corner table, where he is medicating his head-and-chest-cold with all manner of hot spiced adult beverages*

Aha! And don’t get me started... *goes right on talking* ...about the way we WRITE dates! Today is all good, but yesterday was 12-11-12 in the US, but 11-12-12 in Europe – which would have been a month too late here! And various other confusing combinations! And my computer insists on ranking dates with the year first, rather than last. Which makes sense!

Think about it…. Just try to find anything else that is ranked with the smallest unit first. 6 feet 3 inches. Pi = 3.14…. $1,325.40. And the biggie, the current time of 13:41:30! (1 PM, 41 minutes and 30 seconds.)
That’s why I write dates like this: 2012 December 12. So there!

*blows nose, leans chair against wall and falls asleep*

UD-- I would like to drink a spiced cider, but actually getting into one with you...? Uh, no, thank you.

Eventually, we will stop being dependent upon Earth, and can adopt a time system independent from the Earth and Sun. Or we will wipe ourselves out, which amounts to pretty much the same thing.

So, a drink to Death or Glory!

yeah, we've tied ourselves to time, way too much.
"tomorrow morning" should be a fine answer.

accurate time is good, as a relative thing for stuff like GPS, and internet things.

but, IMO, "natural time" has very few components, that matter.

I wholeheartedly agree, Elliot. I've been using y/m/d for documents and filenames for years. I at least give the European method credit for going in a logical order (smallest to largest), seems to work well for conversations.

And of course with the big day coming up, let's drink to 12.19.19.17.11 (today's date in abbreviated long count in baktun, katun, tun, winal, kin). They make it look nicer when they write it...

I don't wonder if there might be a more interesting method to marking the date. Perhaps 38/261. 261 days to the 38th man burn. We all count down towards things, like 9 days until the "end of the world" two months until my birthday, why not just say to heck with it and make the date that way too.

I'm waiting too. Although I'm on month one or two... But I swear that I only had 3 all year. Maybe 4...
