I think the answer to your first question is pretty simple - you let your guard down when you're at an event like BM. And it wasn't like the cinderella wanted to buy drugs she just wanted to "party." And I wasn't even interested with her anyway even if she was younger. Her friend (who was dressed as a fairy )was younger but she seemed kind of shy. Unfortunately I was the designated go to person for party favors so either way I guess the situation was going to end badly

I am a bit skeptical of the story here. Let me explain why.

Pershing County is the poor stepchild of wealthier parts of Nevada. It's mostly open range and retired people. The love/hate relationship with Burning Man has much to do with the money that can be squeezed out of the participants in the form of fines. Anything with dollars attached to it will do. The Sheriff really doesn't care about the health and well being of the BM participants with their drug enforcement, but rather the money that they can get out of them.

The story that is told by the OP would have been an expensive ordeal to prosecute by Pershing County. They simply don't want to spend money on BM, they don't want to jail people, they don't want to prosecute people---THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY.

The story told above, appears to be some sort of warning not to do anything so serious as to get arrested, but just serious enough for Pershing County to give you a big fat ticket.

I am going to call out this poster as a law enforcement person trying to play a game here!

I'm ignorant of Pershing County procedure. However, I did think it was unusual for someone as well-spoken as the OP to have been so taken in by undercover law enforcement, although really, let's be honest--I'm way overdue to be cited at Burning Man for jay-walking and disturbing the peace. (If anyone can manage that at Burning Man, I can.)

But I digress. The initial post is well-written. The poster is educated, and clearly not stupid, even if he has steep errors in judgment while intoxicated. And let's be honest--the average post from someone who has been cited or arrested is less eloquent, and more confused. Smart people get caught too, but they don't normally seek sympathy; they either keep quiet in their embarassment, or say "OMG, you guys I totally screwed up. Haha! Pass me a beer, Yggy."

Which is why I am so curious as to what happened to the OP (if they are not, in fact, law enforcement). Were the drugs simply that strong? And what is the attraction to "gifting" a "40 something broad" if one is younger and gayer, and has never seen that 40-something broad before?

The only reason I'm sharing my story on here is b/c I'm trying to learn more about others experience with pershing co.

Check under the "Experiences at Burning Man" forum for things involving police, or google eplaya police or eplaya law enforcement or eplaya undercover . . . but don't be surprised if there is little in the way of helpful info. Very few people were actually arrested this year; very very few. Most were warned, or cited and fined. So there's not a treasure trove of info, and what little there is = anecdotal. Google "Lawyers for Burners". Google Nevada law regarding the holding of prisoners. We're honestly not qualified to advise you.

Like I was saying nothing really bad happened to me (besides being harassed by the cops and a few inmates for being gay) BUT I'm surprised there isn't more discussion on here about the jail b/c they were really filling that place up. And to the poster that suggests I was asking for special privileges while in jail that is not true - I know from experience San Francisco and even the dreaded LA Co. jail SEPERATES gay inmates from general population, both during housing and for transportation purposes. And the transportation part may be the most important - I was cited in Hollywood last year for drug possession (yes I have a bit of a substance abuse problem) and my court case went through down-town LA. That had to be the scariest experience ever. I was lucky that going to and from court i had my own "cage" on the bus but others in general population didn't. A jail gang known as the "south siders" (basically if your hispanic you're a "south sider" once you enter jail) stabbed someone (one of their own) on the bus and it took over 20 minutes for the deputies to find out. It wasn't until we were getting off the bus that they finally discovered someone was stabbed - that is how little the deputies cared. If I had been mixed in with the general population it is almost a guarantee that i would have been either assaulted (physically or sexually) or worse.

Pershing Co. may not be as bad BUT still, gay inmates are not supposed to be mixed with the general population. One of the "cell mates" i had thought it was funny to call me his "bitch." But then whenever he needed something we were supposed to be friends - and no not everyone in pershing jail was a burner. I'm seriously considering a lawsuit against pershing co for the emotional distress I endured while in their custody. And I'm surprised there isn't more information on this subject - I guess everyone else is able to make bail, I was unable to b/c my probation was violated in San Francisco thanks to the A-Hole deputies calling my probation officer, so a NO BAIL warrant was issued for me while in jail. I now have a 16 month suspended sentence hanging over my head, meaning if I miss a pee test or something petty like that the court will automatically send me to jail. The only good news is thank god it wont be in pershing co.

Sounds like it might be time for Rational Recovery or Narcotics Anonymous. SF has such meetings. It's not going to hurt anything to cross the threshold for one meeting. Or six. You have already lost more hours than that to consequences.

If you're being genuine, it sounds like you're starting to lose control of your own life, and that left you vulnerable to various petty injustices that jail is guaranteed to bring you. This could just be the beginning of those. How many more of these do you need? Jail is never going to be civil or fair or harassment-free. Imprisonment should be a certain way in a civilized society (and you can advocate for prisoners all you like in the future, which would be nice) but it isn't yet, and you lost your whole Burn to this. A lawsuit won't give it back to you. Good luck, though.

I would also like to add, for the posters implying only "naive" people get caught - think again. The deputies that stormed our camp were mostly dressed as burners. I know it doesn't make much sense that I was busted by a woman narc who I wasn't even interested in but some of my friends are not gay and they fell for the bait and took me with them.

Maybe next year it will be someone you get along with or desire - it seems like they have the resources now to recruit from outside agencies. One of the rangers said he was from utah so they can bring in people from all over the country.

The primary purpose of this thread is really gay rights while in custody. As far as the tactics used to bust people goes that really isn't anything new

i cannot say that i would want to repeat the process, but i can honestly say i learned, and hence became better as a result of the experience.

when i was there, after i got over the Nicotine withdrawals, i was determined to "Ground-Hog Day" it, as i had no idea how long i would be in, the potential was for 5 years.

BUT.....i figured every day, i would do SOMETHING, no matter how small, to improve myself.....Read a Book. Learn a Language, write letters, make artwork, exercise.....whatever....it does not matter, except for when you get out, you are different from when you went in....it is unavoidable.


HOW you change while inside is really up to you, and no one else.

You're not supposed to be booked in with the men - that is my whole point. The "developed" cities in california dont do that for a good reason (it puts your safety in jeopardy, OBVIOUSLY). They eventually moved me but it should not have taken them several days to do so.

They even build a little "boxing ring" in the back of the dorm just in case anyone has a "problem," like say if you dont make your bed right or get caught sleeping during the day, expect to get beat down - especially if you're white, they really home in on you.

And if you're black they wont even let you in the dorm. I dont think you'll get much reading done. lol

They might not even have room to have separate facilities for queer folk. And in San Francisco, and, I believe, Los Angeles there is a large and politically active lgbt population that would push for consideration. I'm not going to start Actually, I guess I am. Think of those southern sheriffs in movies. I know it's not like that, but it's more like than it is San Francisco, or LA.

Take Savannah's advise to heart. And I'll add to that that we tend to tamp down on discussion on arrest and incarceration beyond saying don't share party favors and be polite and don't say any more than you have to. Law Enforcement (henceforth "LEO") reads this board. I think most of us feel that discretion is the better part of valor.

If Pershing Co has the resources to bring in law enforcement from around the country, then they have the resources to provide proper facilities to inmates - including gays.
