Sorry to hear you're sick, Fishy. I suspect I might be right behind you. Woke up yesterday with a strangely sore throat (sore but not the usual scratchy kind), today it feels a bit like I've been punched in the neck. Blarg. With enough bedrest and booze, my immune system should be able to make short work of whatever it is.

Aserendipity, I hope you're being towed in.
And I hope you have them find out why and how they failed.
It's really quite difficult for brakes to fail abruptly and catastrophically.
I've only ever seen it happen on the early toyotas imported.
However they didn't so much fail, as never work in the first place.
Unrepairable due to the design.
More the suggestion of a brake system, than actual brakes.

On the subject of brakes . They are good . I now know more than I ever did before about the systems which control them. BUT I am still remembering the moments of going forward when death seemed likely. Pin it to my favorite moments hanging on to sweet man on his Wide Glide.
I was thinking about the wrong things when I did not fully release my e- brake.

And I do believe in getting a flu shot.

That can happen when the brake won't hold the car, which is often the case.

How did that cause the brake failure?

That was my question also
my son kept telling me that I should have been able to really stomp hard enough to force the hydraulic brakes
so I was feeling not only stupid but too weak
but today i learned that there is a heating which overrides so not only the rear is altered all of the system is nonresponsive

If this is possible, I really want to understand it.
As far as I understand it, the only thing that should have happened is rear brake failure, dangerous, but no front brake failure.
Some electronic controls may have some complexity I am unaware of.

Overheating brake fluid or pads can cause softness or failure.
It's hard for an emergency brake to do this, especially if it wasn't on hard enough to prevent driving.
It won't affect the front brakes.
Emergency brakes usually are mechanical, so have no effect on brake fluid.

The crudest emergency brakes use a mechanical cable to tension the standard rear brakes, drum or disc.
Superior units have a separate caliper or totally separate brake set on the rear wheels, typically drum brakes on a disc rear system.

The hydraulic system is normally two systems in an X pattern.
Both must fail to lose braking.
Better systems use three.

Without some other failure you should not have lost braking.
I think your son is right.

I would really like to know more.
If this can happen, I need to know how it is possible.

You really mustn't feel bad about forgetting the emergency brake.
It happens.

Losing all brakes is very concerning though.
Maybe there is a communication issue, but if your shop can't explain it, you may need a second opinion.

Sudden brake failures in accidental acceleration cases have happened, usually vacuum line related.
Murder mysteries have explored the concept for ages, and it is hard to do and always leaves traces.
Limiting braking force is easier, but that is easy to discover too.

Then, there is the idiot's approach of spraying tire polish on your brake pads by accident.
