Rampart, contact and volunteer?

In 2012, on Temple Burn day I fell off of my elephant and badly twisted my ankle. My camp mates took me to RAMPART where they took x-rays and found no breaks, put me in a splint-cast, gave me crutches, all in under 50 minutes. I made it to the Burn that night.

In my 12 years I have volunteered for various positions, I would really like to volunteer for RAMPART in 2013 to partially give back to a group that works their tails off while we party! The x-ray tech said she worked 3 12-hour shifts during the Burn and barely got out to see the Burn.

Glad to hear you got away without a break. As for rampart volunteering, I'm pretty sure you do that through the regular ESD volunteer channels. Fill out the volunteer questionnaire, make sure to check the Emergency Services Department, and ask the people who respond about getting on that team.

RAMPART is the nickname given to the clinic operated by the BMORG contractor at burningman. Currently it is Humboldt General Hospital from Winnemucca Nevada. They were looking for emt's and RN's pre event 2012 and I do not know if they use volunteers. http://www.hghemsmedstaff.com/

The field personnel you see wearing yellow shirts on the various units are ESD (Emergency Services Department) volunteers that volunteer directly with BMAN. Our stations are located at the 3'oclock and 9'oclock streets. You can get more information for ESD here http://www.brcesd.org/ ESD provides EMS, Fire, Mental Health Services and more. Staffed by professionals from every aspect of emergency management as well as surgeons, MD's, RN's, Firefighters and Communications.

ESD also staffs the major burns - temple, man, art burns etc with an IC and a rapid intervention team as well as safety. This was year 7 for me with ESD and I am having a blast. Many FF's and emergency personnel fell burned out in the default world, but when you respond to a call at BM or help a walk in patient it is a completely different vibe and many find it relaxing over the default clinical type of response. FIll out the volunteer form at ESD if your interested, I do not know how to volunteer for Humboldt General for their "RAMPART" station on the esplanade at about 530.

It is a side of BRC I have not seen in 12 years (thank goodness).

I was starting to deconstruct our MV and was going to climb down from the roof when I began to fall. I was going to fall on my head so I pushed off of the ladder to get my feet under me. Unfortunately, I hit a tool bag with my right foot before hitting the playa and twisted my ankle. My friends threw me in our pink elephant and drove me over to RAMPART and carried me in.

After getting my info I was told I was first up, however, before being called to see a doctor a woman was brought in by an EMT holding gaze against her bloody back of the head. Yeah, they need to take her before me. Then my friend Harry brought in a naked women so high on drugs she couldn't talk. All they could get from her was 'my names a secret'. Yeah, take her before me as well. I am fine and being entertained. Then some guy came in with a bad, bloody hand wound, yes take him first as well. I can see how this is unlike any normal ER. Wow.

When they finally came in for me they took me in and did 3 x-rays, they had an ankle specialist in and he had them do one more x-ray, couldn't find any breaks but had to splint-cast me and give me crutches. And I was outside in 50 minutes waiting for my friends to come back.

A job that doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. I know that nobody does it for the thanks but I certainly want to thank them and I have found a new way to give back to BRC!

Yeah and it all goes a lot faster without all the damned INSURANCE PAPERWORK, geez... no bar codes on the bandaids AT ALL. And everybody is your neighbor.

It is a whole 'nother world working EMS in BRC, and I LOVE it.

One thing to be aware of--qualifications. Typically, ESD wants certifications and having spent the last year working in whatever area you volunteer in.

The med stations do have one person per shift to do non-medical stuff, so, no quals needed although it's usually someone with some kind of serve-the-public experience.

There are quite a few positions in ESD without formal medical experience, there is logistics and greeters positions as well. Signing up is the first step to figure out where you can fit.

I may not qualify for some positions but I will find something to do. Heck, I'd even be one of those awesome folks that drive you back to camp in a golf cart. That was so nice of them.

I'd loved when they asked my address and I started to give them my default world address and she said, no, your playa address.
