Zeer pots

Has anybody successfully used a zeer fridge at BM? Last minute project here. Also, I understand why the outer pot must be made out of terra cotta, but couldn't the inner container be made of metal or even plastic?

Maybe you could even use plastic bottles shoved into the holes of a cinder block, the intermediate space filled with sand.
