Alternative Route

Hey All, Just a quick question about alternative routes. I've known a few folks to go around Pyramid Lake on the 445. It meets up to the 447 on the West side of Gerlach, avoiding Fernley, Nixon, Empire and Gerlach all together. It is improved gravel, but much less traveled and avoids most of the backup in Gerlach.

Has anyone gotten to the burn via this route? Would you suggest it to anyone in non-RV rigs?

Well, I have never driven on the 445, always the 447. I really don't see the advantage of taking it since the 447 is a known and fairly modern road. As Burners', we know where all the speed traps are and we know what actually to expect when driving the 447. While the 445 is not a dirt road, it is not traveled as much and my not be of the same quality of the 447 and we may not know its pitfalls.

The extra or less time on each road is irrelevant since if you are arriving at the gates between Saturday night and Tuesday morning of the event, any saved time will easily be eaten up by trying to enter the event. If you are traveling at night (Entering), I would highly recommend taking the 447 for safety reasons. As for exiting the event, I would really look into it since it might be a massive time saver and MUCH safer to drive than the 447. Which, due to the stupidity of some Burner's can be dangerous on Exodus.

Based on that, I would advise against taking it at any time.

Yeah, sounds like the gravel may be tire eaters. Thanks for the info!!

SR 445 aka Pyramid Highway, as you said is graded dirt/gravel, past Warrior Point where it turns into unmarked Indian Road 2. Its on and off and back on and off the res. You would need to take Sand Pass Rd once you get back on the res, not Indian Road 7, which may be unmarked as well. Indian Road 7 follows the railroad, Sand Pass Rd doesn't.
I've only been about a mile past Warrior Point, while working but I've seen plenty of folks from California driving south so I would guess it's a decent road.
If you can find it where you live, a decent map book is the Nevada Road and Recreation Atlas by Benchmark Maps.
