Couch dumping?

does anyone know of a trash place or two in Reno that will accept couches or bulkier items for dumping after the burn?

thanks guys! there's nothing mentioning couches specifically on that sticky thread and it's not clear on the Survival Guide that couches would be allowed at those locations but i'll take your word that "cubic yard" means they'll take them.

Apparently you haven't been to a landfill before, they take pretty much anything a normal person would have to throw away and they have signs out front saying things they wont take. Most things they don't accept for normal rates (at my local one) you have an option to pay more and they will still dispose of it properly.

Waste Management isn't really landfills but take bulk items too. Anywhere on that list will probably take your couch, you could always even take a sledge hammer to it and make it smaller so you pay less.

Landfills and transfer stations generally charge by weight, not volume, except for items like tires that may be charged by the piece. Expect a $20 - $25 minimum per load. The locals in Gerlach and Nixon charge by the sack, last I heard. Which means they probably aren't equipped to handle a fucking couch.

Camp I was in my first year had two couches. But then again, they brought up two box trucks of stuff and had a storage unit for the other 11.5 months of the year.

Yes, it is a major oversight that specific types of furniture are not mentioned for acceptance at the trash landfills.

I'm sorry you were not able to get any concrete information here on eplaya about the various landfills in the Nevada area and their pricing policies. Some places in Northern California charge a flat fee for couches, etc. One of the owners of the orphaned couches I picked up told me he saves money by taking a sledge hammer to furniture and turning it into rubble. Many of the couches I get on craigslist are destined to go to the landfill anyway if I didn't take them off their hands, or they'd dump them in some back alley. I feel it's good that these couches get at least one more good use before they are dumped. The prior owners are happy that they are not the ones who have to pay the disposal fee.

The last couch that I dumped at the landfill in South Lake Tahoe charged $55. If it's in decent shape and vacuumed, then Goodwill or Salvation Army will most likely take it at a drop off location.

as you know it's gonna be a dustbowl this year so we're gonna anticipate the couches to be trashed. we want to dump it in Reno to save on gas and not have to deal with it when we get home. this thread will be helpful for people traveling from far away lands. so... i called and these places will take couches:

Waste Management Transfer Station
1390 East Commercial Row, Reno, NV, 775-326-2416 (different from Survival Guide). 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on weekends and Labor Day. $7.50 per cubic yard, $19 minimum. (they said $20 for two couches)

$8 per cubic yard. M-Sat 8-5 CLOSED on Labor Day

i didnt bother with Lockwood because it's closed on weekends and Labor Day.

what I mean is owning versus renting versus paying someone to haul it for you. it's obviously no problemo if you own a vehicle that can transport a couch from A to B like teardropper seems to. in my case we're having couches hauled from Oakland to BRC. getting them from SF to Oakland requires having a friend with a pick up truck help us out. instead of having them hauled back to Oakland after the burn, dumping them in Reno saves gas and the hassle.
