Anybody dressed as a desert arab during BM?

What to wear? What not to wear? Where to find and how to make anything from goggles to fantastic pieces of playawear.

Anybody dressed as a desert arab during BM?

Postby macackack » Mon Aug 06, 2012 5:25 pm

Hey guys, I'm going to my first burning man and I'm thinking of dressing like a desert arab. Some people say it will be really stuffy, but supposedly it's very breezy and such. And desert people wear it for a reason. Has anybody dressed like this during burning man, and was it better than the standard hat & shorts?

standard hat and shorts?

huh, huh, yeah, this is your first burn.... That standard wear is passed out at the gate and is required.
Saw plenty of people in togas and wearing shemagh......but no Arab outfits......

If you're going to buy a thawb to wear, make sure it's cotton. Cotton, cotton, cotton (same with the keffiyeh/shemagh). Most of the cheap ones you see are poly, spandex, or a blend, and they will be hot as fuck.

White cotton is great for daily wear as it reflects some heat and is breathable. But you may want to reconsider the long flowy robes if you are planning on biking much. Maybe you could hike them up with a garter clip type of thing.

What Eric and Darcitanada said. I say DOO EEET!!!! Burning Man is the place to wear stuff you think might be cool or fun, but you normally would never get the chance to wear. Want to wear a kilt? Go for it! Want to dress in drag? Join the crowd, and take your pick of Milton Berle/Monty Python (comedy style), or get decked to the nines and release your inner drag queen. Stormtrooper? Awesome, maybe you can catch a ride on the Death Star Art Car. Bunny suit? Great, you can join the Billion Bunny March. Unicorn? There's going to be a Unicorn Stampede on Wednesday afternoon, I think. Whatever fun, unusual, interesting thing you can think of, Black Rock City is the place for that :)

I wear salwaar kameez, which is essentially a long tunic and cotton pants. I don't always wear the long scarf (dupatta) because it gets tanglesome. It is cooler in that it keep the sun off. Sometimes I just wear the tunic. Or long white cotton nightgowns.

Do it.

I have the full length black Saudi veils from the 70s (two sets, in fact). Those I skip because they are polyester and hot as hell. Great in the whiteouts, though. I do wear my Egyptian abbaya, cotton, long, but I slit it up the sides for breeziness. The underskirt is optional.
I'm too jaded to think up a good sig-line. Need more coffee.

As you can see, NOBODY has EVER thought of this before.

FYI, the long dressy things get caught up in your bike if you're not careful. See if you can find a girl's dirt bike.

Its great attire if all you are going to do is walk. Bikes or other activities complicate matters. There is no thunderdome or man to climb or black rock roller disco or interactive artwork in the arabian desert, so that attire works there. But on the playa it may be a pain in the ass for the active burner. I wear the head piece (forget the name, but its like the one Yassir Arrafat used to wear) and its great. You can cover your face in a dust storm.

I sometimes wear a kilt, but for me its cargo shorts for ultimate comfort. And a madras shirt. Not terribly interesting, but its versatile
